Livan Hernandez targets his third win of the season when the Minnesota Twins play the rubber match of their three-game series with the Chicago White Sox this evening at U.S. Cellular Field.
Hernandez, signed by the Twins to a one-year, $5.5 million deal this offseason, has been superb in his first two starts for Minnesota, going 2-0 while pitching to a 3.86 earned run average. After beating the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on Opening Day, Hernandez topped the Kansas City Royals on Saturday, allowing four runs and seven hits over seven innings.
This will be the Cuban-born right-hander's first start against the White Sox.
Chicago will counter with a Cuban righty of its own in Jose Contreras, who has not had the same kind of success to start the season as his countrymate. Against the Detroit Tigers on Friday, Contreras gave up five runs (four earned) and 10 hits in five innings, but did not factor in the decision of his team's 8-5 win.
Contreras has faced the Twins 11 times (10 starts) over the course of his career and is 4-3 with a 4.13 ERA in those games.
