MLB: Home Run Prop

A week into the MLB regular season is the perfect time to take advantage of our Home Run Proposition wager.

Here’s a look at some of the favorites, but you can view the extensive list here. Odds for the most regular season home runs are listed in parenthesis.

Ryan Howard (4:1)

The big man from Philadelphia was second in the National League last year with 47 homers, one year after leading MLB with 58 in 2006. Howard only has one dinger so far this season, but that number will start to skyrocket quickly.

Alex Rodriguez (4:1)

A-Rod led the majors with 54 home runs lat season and he’s looking for another big year after signing a contract extension with the Bronx Bombers. Rodriguez has one homer this year, but his power to sure to heat up as the weather does.

Prince Fiedler (6:1)

Fielder led the NL with 50 dingers last year, and he’s part of an imposing lineup in Milwaukee. Batting ahead of Ryan Braun, he can’t be pitched around too often. Prince is the son of former big league slugger, Cecil Fielder, and he inherited his big girth and power from his dad.

Rick Ankiel (10:1)

Ankiel is certainly the most surprising name on this list, having been converted to an outfielder after losing his ability to find the strike zone as a pitcher. Ankiel had 11 homers last year in just 172 at bats with the Cardinals, and he’s off to a fast start this season with three already.

Ryan Braun (12:1)

Braun is another Brewers’ slugger and he was rewarded with the NL Rookie of the Year last year after hitting 34 home runs in just 451 at bats. Braun has moved from third base to left field this year, allowing him to concentrate on his offense even more.

Carlos Pena (15:1)

Pena bounced around a bit before finding a home with the Tampa Bay Rays last season. He turned a lot of heads with 46 home runs last year even though his previous high was just 27. Pena is off to another quick start with two home runs in his first five games.

Derrek Lee (20:1)

The Chicago first baseman has plenty of power as evidenced by his 45 home runs in 2005. Lee struggled with injuries in 2006 and then hit only 22 home runs in 2007. This year, Lee has three homers already and he provides good value at these odds considering his Wrigley Field home.

David Ortiz (20:1)

Boston’s Ortiz had a big drop-off in home run production last year, hitting 35 after 54 in 2006. A lot of that decline was blamed on his knees which are said to be improved, So far in 2008 though, Ortiz has struggled at the plate with just one home run and three RBI’s to date.

Albert Pujols (20:1)

Pujols is the biggest name of this list, but he’s not expected to be completely healthy this season due to lingering questions with his elbow. Pujols has also been dealing with a finger injury this season, and he’s homerless through the first six games of the season for St. Louis.
