The Arizona Diamondbacks were able to get a small measure of revenge on the Colorado Rockies on Friday. The defending National League West champions will try to make it two wins in a row on their division rival when the teams continue a three-game early season series tonight at Coors Field.
In the first meeting between the clubs since last October's NL Championship Series, in which the Rockies swept Arizona in four games to reach their first- ever World Series, the Diamondbacks spoiled Colorado's 2008 home opener with an 8-1 rout.
Arizona starter Micah Owings was brilliant in his season debut, as the young right-hander allowed just two hits and one run while racking up a career-high nine strikeouts in a sharp 6 2/3-inning effort.
Owings got plenty of support from his offense. Mark Reynolds went 2-for-4 with a homer and three RBI, while Justin Upton had a solo blast among his three hits. Orlando Hudson finished with two hits and a pair of RBI to help the Diamondbacks halt a brief two-game slide.
Todd Helton accounted for Colorado's lone run with a solo homer off Owings in the seventh inning. The Rockies, now off to a 1-3 start to the year, mustered only one other hit on the day.
Colorado starter Mark Redman took the loss after surrendering five runs (four earned) and nine hits in 5 2/3 innings of work.
