30 Million Reasons To Play Hard
During the 2007 World Series, New York Yankee Alex Rodriguez opted out of his 10-year, $252 million dollar contract. At the time, Rodriguez came off like a crazy media whore and it didn’t sit well with Red Sox fans. Big shock. Well, it seems that A-Rod was crazy… like a fox, as he re-signed with the Yankees for $275 million over 10 years. It seems like a sticking point may have been a $30 million dollar difference.
Understandably not wanting to guarantee the $30 million, the Yankees offered it in the form of a performance-based bonus. Interesting… So, the better he plays, he more he gets paid. Thankfully, these types of bonuses have been used more and more in past years as insurance for the owners and incentives for the players. For GMs, it’s almost like the advent of fire, the pill and TiVo all at once. On the flip side, that giant crack of thunder you just heard was all the agents who represent professional athletes pretending to sneeze “assholes” into their hands.
