Taking a gander at the standings throughout the first half of the 2008 MLB Betting season, you’ll notice the American League has been leaps and bounds better than the National League overall. Eight of the 14 AL teams boast a +.500 record or better, while the NL has just six of its 16 representatives owning a winning overall mark. That said; let’s take a look at some of the most lucrative teams throughout the first half of the season.
1) Minnesota Twins (53-42) (+$1689.00) No matter what the Twins do to its roster during the off-season, Manager Ron Gardenhire’s club always seems to be in the thick of the AL Central race. They closed the month of June out in style winning 11 of its 13 games, and wrapped up the first half of July rewarding baseball betting enthusiasts with an 8-4 effort. They’ve racked up a bulk of their wins and earnings at home (32-18 +$1443), but have also showed a penchant for competing on the road where they’re 21-24 overall reeling in $246 of profit for the MLB betting public. Minnesota clubs from the past depended upon its speed and pitching staff to win a bulk of their games, but that hasn’t been the case in ’08. The offense has been the story this year ranking 4th overall in batting average (.278) and 7th in runs per game (4.88). Look for Minnesota to continue to battle the rest of the year if their sticks remain hot.
2) Texas Rangers (50-46) (+$1397.00) The Texas Rangers have been an underdog bettors dream throughout the first half of the 2008 season. They only stand four-games over .500 at the break, but they’ve reeled MLB bettors in close to $1400 on the year simply due to the fact that they take care of business on the road. Yes, they’re just 25-25 overall as a visitor, but they’ve made their supporters a whopping $975 which states they’ve cashed quite a few of those +160 to +220 lines as a visitor. As usual, it’s all about the Rangers offense that ranks first in RPG (5.60), batting average (.283), and OPS (.816). The pitching staff is ranked either dead last or second to last in all major categories, so expect the Rangers to continue to keep this mind frame and look to outslug their opponents the rest of the way.
3) Florida Marlins (50-45) (+$1377.00) The Marlins brass knew exactly what they were doing when they unloaded a pair of superstars this past off-season in a blockbuster deal with the Detroit Tigers. With Cabrera and Willis now out of the picture, the Marlins competed mightily throughout the first half of the season to the tune of a 50-45 mark. They’re the third highest grossing ball club bringing in close to $1400 on the season. They’re one of the few NL teams that showed a knack for playing solid ball both home and away. They’re six games over .500 at Dolphins Stadium (+765), and one-game under on the road (+$612). This club has hit a ton of home runs to lead the league (135) and it ranks 8th in RPG (4.86) and OPS (.761), but it’s going to need more from its pitching staff in the second half if it expects to compete with both Philadelphia and NY for the top spot in the NL East.
4) Tampa Bay Rays (55-39) (+$1274.00) The Tampa Bay Rays are still the best story in baseball even though they suffered their longest losing streak of the season right before the break. If not for dropping the seven games in a row, the Rays would have held the top spot as the most lucrative team in the league. That said, Rays management has done a phenomenal job of resurrecting this dying club, and they should compete with both the Yankees and Red Sox throughout the last couple months of the season. Tropicana Field is now one of the toughest places to go into and win; a far cry from the vacation spot it used to be for their opponents. Their pitching, speed, and defense has kept them in the AL East race, so look for Manager Joe Maddon to continue to look to those areas to allow his young club to try and pull off the impossible dream.
