MLB bettors get to wrap their hands around the second match of the “El Series” this afternoon when the AL Central Division leading Chicago White Sox head north to Wrigley Field to duke it out with the NL Central Division leading Chicago Cubs. Sox fans have been clamoring for this series ever since the Cubs throttled their club in last year’s six game series.
Looking to make its sports betting public happy will be the Palehose Jose Contreras who comes into his 15th start of the season with a 6-5 record. He sports an overall ERA of 3.24 and 1.14 WHIP allowing 84 hits and 36 runs (34 earned) with a K/BB ratio of 55/24 in just less than 95 total innings of work. The White Sox have been a tough luck loser in three of his last four overall, and his last effort at home against the Colorado Rockies saw him drop back-to-back decisions for the first time this season. In seven overall starts as a visitor, Contreras is 3-2 with a 3.45 ERA and 1.30 WHIP. He’s been real tough to score on however since the 48 hits he’s surrendered saw just 19 batters cross home plate. Contreras has lost three straight starts against the Chicago Cubs, but owns an 8-5 overall mark in 18 career Interleague starts.
Opposing the Cuban will be Cubs right-hander Jason Marquis who will be making his first Wrigley start in the month of June. He enters his turn in the rotation 5-3 overall with a 4.24 ERA and 1.49 WHIP. He’s allowed 81 hits and 38 runs (35 earned) while striking out 37 and issuing 30 free passes in 74+ innings of total work. Jason has really turned it around of late evidenced by his domination of the Toronto Blue Jays his last time out against Roy Halladay allowing underdog moneyline players to cash in on a huge payday. In his L/3 starts overall, Marquis is 3-0 with a tiny 1.96 ERA and 1.04 WHIP. He allowed a total of five runs and 11 hits in just over 18 innings during that stretch. In three career starts against the White Sox, the right-hander is 1-1 with a lofty 10.06 ERA.

The Cubs have been a tremendous investment at home whenever Jason Marquis has toed the rubber. They’re 17-5 in that scenario the L/22 times, and they own the best record in all of baseball at 29-8. The White Sox are 1-4 the L/5 times they’ve faced a winning team playing greater then .600 ball on the road, and they’re currently on a six-game road losing streak. That said, the White Sox are 4-1 the L/5 times Contreras’ squared off against a winning team on the road, while the Cubs are 1-4 in Marquis L/5 starts against a + .500 team regardless of venue. Look for Guillen and the Southsiders to cash as small underdogs this afternoon.
