With Run for the Roses one week away, trainers and horses are hard at work.
Gayego was hard at work over the weekend with his trainer, Paulo Lobo and his regular rider Mike Smith, who both flew in from California to Louisville, KY to get in a final workout in before the Kentucky Derby on May 3rd. The colt went five furlongs over a muddy track in 1:00.76 which was the fifth fastest time of 20 horses running that distance. Gayego has finished first or second in all five career starts.
Monba, another Kentucky Derby contender also worked five furlongs with a time of 1:02:60 and his stablemate Cowboy Cal had a time of 1:00 at Keeneland earlier today.
Smooth Air, who missed two days training because of a slight fever Friday, has improved according to trainer Benny Stutts Jr. The colt's temperature was normal on Saturday and as long as he continues to do well he'll return to the track Sunday morning.
Stutts said the colt is now scheduled to go to the track Sunday. His temperature is back to a normal 99.9 degrees.
"Right now, he is doing much better," Stutts said. "He is bright and eating. If he is not 100%, he will not run in the Derby. No one wants to run in the derby more than me."
The Derby is just four days away!
