Everybody in the mainstream is tuned in to the Kentucky Derby and maybe the Breeders’ Cup but the straws that stir the drink of this sport are the warriors, the worker bees, the plebes or in other words, the claimers.

One way astute horse bettors can get a concept of which claimers are coveted, is to watch the claim report at their local track and project the hot claim box items as horses to bet in the future.

At Santa Anita this month, several claimers were involved in shakes, a ritual where there is more than one claim slip entered for a horse and the shake is where dice are rolled and the winners of the shake rolls away with his or her new claimee.
