With a paucity of talented young riders in Southern California at the present time, horse race betting fan should be on the look out for a new face that just may make some waves this summer.
His name is Michael Martinez and he hails from a hotbed of great jockeys, Panana.
One of the best things he has going for him is his cousin, Alex Solis, the dean of riders on the circuit.
Almost a cool 22 years of age, Martinez has some work to do in this country to learn the language and the customs of being a professional on this circuit but he’s already won 40 races in his native land and will get to learn from one of the best journeyman riders in the country.
Solis came to this country when he was a teenager and he can help with the growing pains of the rider, who will be living with Solis in Glendora.
Martinez attended one of the most renowned jockey schools in the world in his native land and with help from the cousin, he could have a big impact on the circuit during the Del Mar meet.
Expect him to use his patience, as that’s one of Solis’s best traits and also expect him to be embraced by some big barns.
Another thing horse bettors should know about Martinez is that he has a good agent calling the shots. Alex Procel Crowley, who had the underrated pilot Felipe Martinez, no relation, for years, will guide the youngster’s mounts.
