PGA Tour Golf Betting – Tour Hits Congressional

Tiger Woods is the host for this week’s PGA Tour event at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Maryland, but of course he won’t be in the field for the tournament. So who’s the sports betting favorite for those doing any golf betting on this year’s AT&T National event?

Well, it’s not K.J. Choi, despite the fact that he won the inaugural AT&T National last year. Choi ended up three strokes ahead of runner-up Steve Stricker, while Pat Perez, Jim Furyk, and Stuart Appleby were six strokes back of the leader in a tie for third place. Woods finished in a tie with Robert Allenby for sixth place, seven strokes behind Choi.

Choi, though, is back at +3000 golf odds to defend his AT&T National title this week. Instead, it’s Furyk who is pegged as the +1200 PGA betting favorite. Hunter Mahan and Mike Weir, who tied for eighth place at last year’s event, are each listed at +1800 odds this time around, with Allenby at +2000, Appleby at +2500, and Anthony Kim a bit back at +2800.

Trevor Immelman, Camilo Villegas, and Ben Crane are listed with Choi at +3000, with Aaron Baddeley and Tim Clark at +3300, and each of Brandt Snedeker, Lucas Glover, Rod Pampling, Andres Romero, and Stricker at +3500. Ryuji Imada is back at +4000 to get the trophy this weekend, with Perez and Quinney both listed behind him at +4500.

Overseas the European Tour will be participating in The European Open at The London Golf Club in Kent, England this week. This event was played at the K Club in Straffan, Ireland last year (under the name Smurfit Kappa European Open), where it was won by Colin Montgomerie. The defending champion, however, once again is not the favorite.

Montgomerie is listed at +2500 odds to get the win this week, but it’s Sergio Garcia who has been set as the +800 favorite. Montgomerie edged Niclas Fasth by one stroke in the European Open last year, with Anthony Wall, Pelle Edberg, Gregory Havret, and Peter Hanson each two strokes back of the lead. Garcia didn’t play in that tournament.

Padraig Harrington, who ended up in a tie for 51st place in this event last year, is sitting at +1100 odds to win this time around, with Justin Rose and Robert Karlsson at +1400, Soren Hansen at +2000, and both Richard Green and Ian Poulter at +3000. Charl Schwartzel is sitting at +3500 odds, with Thomas Leet and Jeev Mikha Singh at +4000.

2001 champion Darren Clarke is pegged at +4500 odds to get the trophy again on Sunday, with Fasth, Nick Dougherty, Paul McGinley, Francesco Molinari, and Graeme McDowell at +4500 as well. Oliver Wilson and John Bickerton are listed back at +5000.

The European Tour will move on to Scotland next week, where they’ll participate in The Barclays Scottish Open at Loch Lomond in Glasgow. The PGA Tour, meanwhile, will next head to TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Illinois for the John Deere Classic. The world’s top golfers will then converge on Royal Birkdale in Lancashire for the 2008 British Open.

Of course, the world’s No. 1 player won’t be making the trip to Lancashire – and that’s because Woods is out for the season. Woods had been listed as the favorite to win the British Open on the early lines, but Ernie Els is now sitting in that spot (with +1000 odds to claim the major). Harrington and Garcia are next on the chart at +1100.

Other notables and their current odds to win the British Open this year include Phil Mickelson (+1200), Lee Westwood (+1400), Rose (+1600), Retief Goosen (+2000), Adam Scott (+2000), Furyk (+2500), Geoff Ogilvy (+2500), and Luke Donald (+3000).
