The party’s over, kids. Tiger Woods, undeniably the most feared sports betting opponent in any sport, returns to the fairways at Torrey Pines this weekend after his knee was surgically repaired. The field has cashed in huge while Woods was absent, making golf betting much more enjoyable and unpredictable. Now that Woods is back, it’s all business again on the PGA betting front.
Woods is a -200 golf betting favorite to finish in the top-4 this weekend at the U.S. Open this weekend. The only other golfer deemed to stay within striking distance of Woods is Phil Mickelson, who has a +140 sports betting odds chance of finishing atop the Leaderboard this weekend.
The truth is, now that Woods is back in action, the field will be keeping an eye on him to see how he reacts to his surgically repaired knee. He confessedly has not walked a full 18-holes on the limp leg yet, but says that he is “good to go”. Even if the knee is hurting or sore, you can bet safely that Woods’ thirst for victory will drive him through the pain, and keep his swing true.
Tiger has enjoyed tremendous success at Torrey Pines, already claiming a victory at the Buick Invitational earlier this year. Woods also finished as a runner-up in last year’s US Open and before that in 2005 as well. To say that Woods feels comfortable at Torrey Pines is an understatement. But the golf betting community is right to be concerned about his knee. There’s no telling how that knee is going to react.
In the meantime, who is poised to pass Tiger on the board? Justin Rose (+550)? Nope. Rory Sabatini (+1200)? Yeah right. Trevor Immelman (+650) might. Immelman, the only golfer to weather the hurricane that is Tiger, stood fast at the Masters and toppled the giant. Torrey Pines isn’t his ideal course, but Immelman has been playing at an elite level throughout the year. If anyone has a chance of unseating Tiger, it’s Immelman.
Whether you doubt Tiger doesn’t concern the world’s best. He’s going to be ready to swing for the fences, and I have faith in him. Where you put your money in our PGA futures is up to you. Just don’t be caught with the lint because you doubted greatness.
