U.S. Open Betting

Here are Groups A – F and my pick to win.

Group A

The favorite is Sergio Garcia at 5/2 and there really isn’t any reason for me to pick against the Spaniard. Garcia is playing very well. Well enough, in fact, to recommend a long-shot wager on him at 16 to 1 in the BetUS futurebook to win the U.S. Open straight-up. He should dominate the other participants in this group. However, Padraig Harrington looks tough at 11 to 4. He has been putting very well and Garcia can have a bad tournament once in a while. I’ll take Padraig and the odds in this group.

Group B

There are some very good players in this group. Vijay Singh is an obvious stand-out at fair online wagering odds of 21/10 but I can’t recommend because Vijay hasn’t finished higher then 11th at Torrey Pines. Mike Weir is a terrific golfer but his odds in this group, 7 to 2, are just too low for me to make a wager. That leaves me with Justin Rose, Trevor Immelman, and Stewart Cink. I’m going with Immelman. He’s been playing well lately and there’s just something about the guy that I like. He could stay under the radar up until the final round this Sunday. I also like his odds in this group.

Group C

Boo Weekley and Stephen Ames are going off at online odds of 3 to 1. Anthony Kim and Tim Clark are going off at online odds of 13 to 4. Justin Leonard is going off at online odds of 11 to 4. I don’t like anybody in this group. I suppose that if I had to take a stab, then I would take it on Anthony Kim. Kim could surprise some folks. He’s not a bad golfer and, like every major tournament, there seems to be somebody who makes his presence felt that nobody has thought of.

Group D

I’m going with Robert Allenby in this group. His odds, 11 to 4, aren’t spectacular, but nobody else in this group can hit the greens like Allenby or has the requisite driving accuracy that Allenby has in order to be successful at Torrey Pines. Lee Westwood and Aaron Baddeley, both at 3 to 1, could kick me in my teeth come Sunday, but I doubt it. Allenby is coming into this tournament very well. He’s the pick.

Group E

There hasn’t been a lot of online wagering action in this group as Stuart Appelby, Andres Romero, Paul Casey and Zack Johnson are all going off at BetUS online odds of 3 to 1. Henrick Stenson is going off at odds of 57/20. I’m not sure what to make of this group, but I have to pick a winner, so why not go with Zack Johnson? He has no wins on the PGA Tour since his rookie season ten years ago. He looks to be up against it at Torrey Pines and might not even make the cut after Friday. But, hey, he’s got as good of a chance as anybody in this group! Maybe, the U.S. Open is his coming out party.

Group F

Like Group E, Group F is an absolute mess. I mean, how is it possible that Ben Crane, Sean O’Hair, Rory Sabattini and David Toms are all going off at 3 to 1? Are they really that close to each other in terms of talent? Scott Verplank is going off at BetUS online odds of 57/20. If he doesn’t come out on top in this group, then maybe he should retire. That’s how much better Verplank should be than everybody else in this group.
