Tom Hanks once told us, "There's no crying in baseball," but he didn't have to watch one of the better home run hitters in MLB fantasy, Albert Pujols, limp off the field in pain with a calf injury.
So what now? Home runs are getting hard enough to come by now that players can no longer count on steroids to hide their warning-track power, so finding someone on the wire to match his kind of production (.347 batting average, 16 HRs, 42 RBIs) will be tough to find.
Well, allow Bodog Nation to take a crack at it. Here are our top waiver wire pickups for fantasy teams in need of the long ball:
Jason Giambi, 1B, New York Yankees
He may be steroid free (since his last test anyway), but Giambi has shown that he still has the power to put baseballs in the cheap seats. After playing brutal ball in April (.164 BA, 13 RBIs, 5 HRs), he got hot in May (.315 BA, 14 RBIs, 6 HRs) and has been blazing in June. His slugging percentage is at .828 in June and he has four HRs in the month already. If you're lucky enough to have Giambi still on the waiver, pick him up before this streaky hitter cools off.
Jose Guillen, LF/RF, Kansas City Royals
Guillen's been in the news lately for berating his lousy team, calling them "babies" (amongst a handful of expletives) and stating that many of his teammates "don't know how to play the game and win right." As a 12-year veteran in the league, Guillen has the right to say things like this. Plus, he’s been carrying his team in hits, HRs and RBIs since early May.
