Scientology’s Richest Member Leaves Church

Australian casino mogul James Packer is the second richest man in Australia and, until recently, the richest man in the entire Church of Scientology.



Packer has apparently left the church possibly due to it's inherent conflict with Packer's business – L. Ron Hubbard, the church's founder, wasn't very big on gambling. Presumably he didn't buy insurance the either.

Packer, who had been brought into the fold by the Church's most famous nutjob member, Tom Cruise, is the son of the late billionaire media mogul Kerry Packer.

I don't know much about Scientology, but it seems like the majority of their members are pretty wealthy. I didn't know they didn't approve of gambling, but then again, there are plenty of things that they are strange about. When Tom Cruise's wife was about to give birth, a lot of shocking things were revealed about how women and babies were treated during child birth. It just seems strange to me.

I'm not surprised that people are leaving the church. It's an odd lifestyle, but I guess it works for them. I keep hearing about online groups trying to to shut down the church, and there have been tons of protests. I wonder how the Scientologist church is handling that?

People are trying to shut it down? And here I always thought I lived in a country where we had religious freedom. Tom Cruise isn't helping their case either with his crazy antics. I love my girl but that wouldn't make me make a fool of myself by jumping up and down on a couch

I find it ironic that a country with religious freedom is trying to stomp down on the Scientologist church, but then again, many see it as a cult, and if you look at what goes on with cults getting shut down I guess it makes more sense.

To me, any religion could be considered a cult, so I don't know that anybody is right to try and bring down the Scientologist church. I think it's best that we just let them be in peace. If we leave them alone, maybe they'll leave us alone.

So is this just a club for the rich boys and girls? Seriously I really do not think I have seen anyone affliated with this place seem anything other than a "nutjob" and that is being nice, many other words come to mind. They just all see a little "out there".

Jonas, that's the word that I hear the most in reference to Scientology - 'nutjob'. I really can't think of anybody I have heard belonging to the group as being relatively normal. Wait - didn't Will Smith leave Scientology or is he still a part of it? I thought he seemed pretty normal before I heard that.

I read somewhere in an interview that Will joined because he was exploring religions and he thought that Scientology sounded good but after he was with it for a while he thought it was weird so he left.

What right do people have to try and shut them down? Sure, they can express their opinions about Scientology but I doubt it would happen. Too many of the members have clout :lol:
