Just when you thought the reign of Stein had mellowed out, Yankee Stadium has once again erupted in controversy.
Hank Steinbrenner - New York Yankees co-chair and son of George - is apparently more than a little upset with how the current manager (ahem…Joe Girardi) is using flamethrowing phenom Joba Chamberlain.
With the Yankees at 10-10 and closer to the bottom of the AL East than top, Steinbrenner apparently had enough and knew it was time to create a media firestorm. So here goes:
On Chamberlain:
"I want him as a starter and so does everyone else, including him, and that is what we are working toward and we need him there now," Steinbrenner told the New York Times. "There is no question about it, you don't have a guy with a 100-mile-per-hour fastball and keep him as a setup guy. You just don't do that. You have to be an idiot to do that."
Steinbrenner then had some thoughts on how Mike Mussina could improve his game. You know, Mike Mussina, the guy who has pitched in the majors for 18 seasons and has 251 wins.
On Mussina:
"[Mussina] just needs to learn how to pitch like [45-year-old Phillies pitcher] Jamie Moyer," Steinbrenner said.
On Tuesday, the Yankees will kick off a series against the Chicago White Sox. Chien-Ming Wang will take to the hill against Jose Contreras.
