Today, the NBA owners voted to approve the Seattle SuperSonics' relocation to Oklahoma City. If the team can break its lease with Key Arena, look for it to be playing in a new home next season.
Owners approved the move by a vote of 28-2, the dissenters being Portland and Dallas.
"I think Oklahoma City is a better market than some others we are in now," Mavericks owner Mark Cuban wrote to the New York Times in an e-mail, "but it's not better than Seattle."
There is still but one last gasp of hope for fans in Seattle, and that's a lawsuit filed by former owner Howard Schultz to reclaim the team from Clay Bennett. Schultz claims that Bennett broke the good-faith agreement that stated the new owner would make an effort to keep the team in Seattle. That allegation stems from an e-mail conversation Bennett had with co-owners.
"Is there any way to move here for next season or are we doomed to have another lame-duck season in Seattle?" Tom Ward, a co-owner, wrote to Bennett in April 2007.
"I am a man possessed!" Bennett responded. "Will do everything we can."
"I am willing to help any way I can to watch ball here next year," Ward said.
Jerks.
