FIU Panthers vs. Kansas Jayhawks 7:00 ET
Not much went wrong for head coach Mark Mangino’s Jayhawks a year ago, and they’ll look to come out in tonight’s NCAA football betting affair against the Florida International Panthers and prove that last year wasn’t a fluke. KU’s dream season of a year ago saw them go 12-1 SU for the first time in the program’s history and pick up a BCS bowl win when they upended the Virginia Tech Hokies in the Orange Bowl by a 24-21 final count as 3.5-point underdogs.
The Jayhawks set a school record for victories and Mark Mangino was named AP Coach of the Year, but reaching a second consecutive BCS bowl will be difficult as they face a much tougher schedule this time around. It hasn’t been easy being a Panthers fan the last couple years as head coach Mario Cristobal’s squad has managed just one win in the L/24 times they’ve taken the field. That said; they finished the year off in style by upending the North Texas Mean Green to end the nations longest losing streak at 23.
The Panthers return 18 starters from last year’s club that got beaten into a bloody pulp on a weekly basis. Even though they only managed one SU victory, FIU treated CFB bettors decently by posting a 5-7 ATS record. Sure, it’s not a winning mark, but they were at least competitive according to the closing NCAA football lines. In their four non-conference games last season, FIU went 0-4 SU, but they managed a 2-2 ATS mark with covers as 24-point underdogs at home against Maryland, and as 32-point road pups at Miami. They did however get their doors blown off at both Penn State and Kansas.
The Jayhawks were college football betting gold last season as they went on to cover 11 of their 12 games against the closing pointspread. They were awfully impressive in non-conference play where they went a perfect 4-0 SU and ATS outscoring their four opponents by a combined 214-23. The college football wagering public was wary of backing them once Big 12 play began, thinking they weren’t as good as their non-conference work predicted, but that theory all came to a crashing halt when they managed to cover the 3.5-point spread in Boulder in a prime time ESPN telecast that saw them upend the Buffaloes by a 19-14 final count. Kansas boasted the second-highest scoring offense in the FBS last season (42.8 points per game), and junior QB Todd Reesing is back to navigate the high-powered attack once again this year. Reesing threw for more touchdowns (33) and yards (3,486) than any passer in school history, and was only intercepted seven times.
The NCAAF betting trends show that FIU’s a poor 1-5 SU in their L/6 road openers, but they’ve covered the spread in two of the L/3 seasons. They’re also a very poor 2-9 ATS their L/11 road games. Kansas has covered the spread in each of its last five non-conference battles, but is just 1-4 ATS the L/5 times its squared off against a Sun Belt representative with the lone win coming against FIU last season when they rolled the Panthers up by a 55-3 final count as 33-point home chalks.
Sportsbook Oddsmakers have installed the Jayhawks lofty 41-point favorites in this spot, but that number has since been bet down to 36 by the college football wagering public; the ‘total’ currently sits at 57.5.
