Clemson again is a sexy football gambling pick in the ACC after a 10-2 season but the Tigers have to get over the big-game hurdle which they continue to crash. Few teams have failed in big games as much as the Tigers have.

Is this the year they finally meet their potential and crash the BCS?

Offense

The offense looks as good as it has in many years with both C.J. Spiller and James Davis returning to form one of the best running back tandems in the nation. But why stop there?

Quarterback Cullen Harper also returns, which might give the Tigers the best backfield in all of college football.

Davis and Spiller have rushed for 3957 yards and 46 touchdowns in the past two seasons and will approach another ridiculous total again. Spiller is a great home run threat.

The best part is that this offense scored a school record 430 points last year and returns so many key parts. But what good is skill on the outsides if the offensive line isn’t doing the dirty work on the inside?

The Tigers have two first-year starters at the tackle positions and very little experience all the way around on the front five. That could prove to be their downfall if they can’t gel quickly.

The defense is less known mostly because of the stars on offense, but that might change as this year progresses.

Defense

Seven starters return on defense and though there isn’t as much star power as the offense, they are still a very good unit. The Tigers finished 10th in scoring defense last year.

When the biggest concern is a little bit of depth at linebacker, you know it’s a strong unit.

Safety Michael Hamlin is a real standout in the secondary and should be an all-conference player again. Throw in freshman end Daquan Bowers, who was the No. 2 prospect in the nation, and the Tigers should have plenty of playmakers around.

Outlook

Clemson had only two losses last year but both were huge. One was to Virginia Tech and the other was to Boston College – the two best teams in the conference.

This year’s schedule provides plenty of opportunity to fail in big games starting with a neutral site tilt with Alabama to open the season. Throw in road contests at Wake Forest, Boston College and Florida State and a home game against South Carolina to wrap up and the Tigers don’t exactly have a cake walk.

A couple of losses should be expected and the heavily bandied about BCS berth should not.
