| NCAAB: QBs to continue Heisman dominance? The college football season is just over four weeks away, but you can already bet on the Heisman Trophy winner at Sportsbook.com. A quarterback has won the award seven out of the last eight years, with USC running back Reggie Bush the only one to buck the trend. There are 20 players listed with odds and you can see the entire list here. Here’s a look at the favorites. Tim Tebow (5:2) A threat to pass and run from the quarterback position, Tebow became the first sophomore ever to win the Heisman last year. He is the solid favorite again as the Florida Gators return most of their starters from an offense that was third in the nation in scoring last year (42.5 points per game). Chris Wells (5:1) Wells is a junior running back on an Ohio State team that made the national championship game the last two years. Unfortunately they lost both times, but Wells gained 1,609 yards last year including 146 against LSU in the title game. He could also be the number one pick in next year’s NFL draft. Chase Daniel (5:1) The quarterback Daniel burst onto the national scene last year as a junior, guiding formerly downtrodden Missouri to a 12-2 record and a win in the Cotton Bowl over Arkansas. Missouri is considered one of the top teams in the country heading into the season, and Daniel winning the Heisman would not be considered a big upset. Knowshon Moreno (8:1) Moreno doesn’t have the name recognition of the players listed before him, but the now sophomore running back was electrifying last year with Georgia with 1,334 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns. Moreno is going to get plenty of carries this year as coach Mark Richt likes to run, but can a sophomore win two years in a row? LeSean McCoy (10:1) McCoy is a sophomore tailback from Pittsburgh who rushed for over 1,300 yards and 14 touchdowns in first college campaign. He has all the talent in the world, but these odds seem overly optimistic with a questionable offensive line, and a Panthers’ program that will be lucky to crack the Top 25. Graham Harrell and Michael Crabtree (10:1) Harrell is a senior quarterback this season at Texas Tech. He directed the number one passing attack in the country last year, and his top receiver, sophomore Michael Crabtree is also 10:1 for this award. The downside for both of these players is they will split some votes, and their numbers get discounted somewhat in the pass-happy Texas Tech offense. The Field There are some big name players who are outside the top list, but provide plenty of value at their current odds. West Virginia quarterback Pat White is 12:1 as he is the focal point of the offense with running back Steve Slaton gone. Wisconsin’s junior running back, P.J. Hill is 15:1 and one of the best runners in the nation when healthy. Remember, Badger running back Ron Dayne won in 1999. Georgia’s junior quarterback Matthew Stafford (15:1) leads a squad that some have ranked as the top in the country. Texas quarterback Colt McCoy (15:1) struggled as a sophomore last year, but he’s a viable candidate if he recaptures his freshman magic. Bet on the 2008 Heisman Trophy Winner at Sportsbook.com |
