Default 2008 Bowling Green Falcons Football Betting Preview

College Football Gambling Preview – Bowling Green Falcons

Bowling Green and those doing some football betting on the Falcons experienced the sweet and the sour last year. The sports wagering sweet was an eight-win season when nobody expected them to be that good. The online wagering sour was an absolute thrashing at the hands of Tulsa (63-7) in the GMAC Bowl game.

Overall, the Falcons had a good year and should be able to build on it. They should win their division handily and don’t be shocked if they give Ball State or Central Michigan a run for the MAC.

Offense

Like many of the teams in the MAC, Bowling Green shouldn’t have any problems on offense.

Tyler Sheehan is a solid at quarterback and he’ll be working with a number of familiar faces. Top wideouts Freddie Barnes and Corey Patridge return and so do the top three running backs.

Most teams have a lead running back but the Falcons use a committee, which produced over 1600 yards and 16 touchdowns last year. If anyone is to establish as the go-to back, it would be senior Anthony Turner, who came on late last year.

This offense averaged 32.1 points per game last year and probably won’t be stopped by anyone in the MAC this year.

The main concern is the offensive line, where the Falcons return just the two starting guards from last year. There are plenty of playmakers on this offense but if the line can’t protect, everything could collapse.

Defense

Again like many MAC teams, the Falcons were all-offense and no-defense last year, and they still had a good season. If they can plug some holes, they might be able to really make some damage.

The rush defense was pillaged for 207.8 yards per game last year.

There’s talent at every level with Diyral Briggs at defensive end, who had five sacks in spring scrimmage, linebacker Erique Dozier and safety P.J. Mahone.

Mahone led the MAC in interceptions last year and leads a pretty good secondary. Cornerbacks Antonio Smith and Kenny Lewis are a solid tandem.

The key to this defense will have to be the fact that nine starters return. In some cases, that’s a bad thing, considering this unit allowed 32 points per game last year but the experience has to be the difference if the Falcons are looking to improve.

Outlook

On the whole, the Falcons return a team laded with seniors and face a relatively light schedule overall. There are no contests with Central Michigan or Ball State, the two powerhouses in the other MAC division, and big non-conference games against Boise State, Pittsburgh and Minnesota are not impossible.

The Falcons have one of the best coaches in the nation in Gregg Brandon and look for them to – at the very least – win their division this year.

BetUS sportsbook already has tons of college football Futures betting available for those of us who can't wait. Bet on the Heisman winner, Conference and Divisional winners and, of course, the 2009 BCS National Championship winner.
