Default Saturday Boxing Tripleheader Preview - Sportsbook.com Boxing Betting

Boxing: Rising stars pack excitement

Three of the sport’s most exciting, up-and-coming stars test their skills in boxing tripleheader that can’t be missed this Saturday.

Young junior middleweights James Kirkland and Alfredo Angulo, along with phenom, junior lightweight Yurioskis Gamboa enter the ring this weekend in what is supposed to be the toughest test yet for each of the rising stars.

Bet on all three bouts here at Sportsbook.com and watch all three fighters attempt to pad their records on HBO Boxing After Dark on Saturday, beginning at 9:45 pm ET.

James Kirkland (-550) vs. Eromosele Albert (+350)

At 24 years of age, James Kirkland is making a name for himself as a knockout artist with 18 KO’s in 21 professional bouts. Out of those 21 fights, only two opponents managed to last more than four rounds with the rising star from Austin, Texas.

In his last bout, Kirkland came out swinging but was knocked down by Allen Conyers just 27 seconds into the match. After getting back to his feet, Kirkland responded with a flurry of punches, knocking Conyers down twice in the following two and a half minutes to earn a first-round TKO.

Albert, known as the “Bad Boy”, enters his match with the younger Kirkland with a 21-1 record with just 10 KO’s. The 33-year-old Albert is coming off a 10-month break after fighting three times in a four and a half month span last year.

One of the opponent’s in that three-match stretch was David Toribio, whom Albert knocked out with a seventh-round TKO. Kirkland knocked Toribio out in four rounds back in 2006.

Alfredo Angulo (-240) vs. Richard Gutierrez (+190)

Another budding star from Mexico, Angulo is a 25-year-old that has knocked his last eight opponents out in four rounds or less, with his last two fights ending in the first round.

Ricardo Cortes found out just how explosive the young Mexican is last February. Cortes and Angulo were engaged in a slow-paced first round when Angulo exploded with a jab, followed by a flurry of punches that ended with a right hook that sent Cortes to the ground. Cortes got back to his feet but the fight ended when he found himself on the canvas again moments later.

Gutierrez, a 29-year-old from Columbia, should provide a challenge for the younger Angulo in what should be the best matchup of the night. At 24-1 in 26 pro bouts, Gutierrez has won three matches in a row since a 12-round majority decision loss to Joshua Clottey in July, 2006.

In recent fights, Gutierrez has been in the ring a lot longer than Angulo as four of his last six matches have gone 10 rounds or more, including a February fight against Jose Varela.

Yuriorkis Gamboa (-800) vs. Darling Jiminez (+500)

Phenom, super-prospect and a cross between Mike Tyson, Roy Jones and Floyd Mayweather. Those are just some of the descriptions given to the boxing prospect from Cuba, Yuriorkis Gamboa.

Oddsmakers don’t expect Darling Jiminez to give Gamboa much of a contest, and his promoters don’t either. Despite this fight, Gamboa is booked for a match in Las Vegas next month with 36 year-old Jose Rojas.

Much like the other two young stars on the card, Gamboa has made short work of his opponents. The 26 year-old Cuban, a former Olympic champ, is a perfect 9-0 and enters his second year as a pro boxer having knocked out his opponent in the first round four times.

Even more impressive, the boxers Gamboa has so easily disposed of are a combined 149-26-6 in their pro careers.

Jiminez, a 28 year-old from the Dominican Republic, is 23-2-2 in his pro career but fought just once in 2007. A former four-time Golden Gloves champ as an amateur, Jiminez has knocked out eight of his last nine opponents.

The only opponent Jiminez hasn’t KO’d in his last nine bouts was Fernando Trejo, who earned a majority decision back in 2004.

Will Jiminez be able to produce the upset or will the veteran boxer lose his first match in four years?

Bet on all three bouts here and tune in on Saturday night for what are expected to be great, action-packed fights.
