I have never heard anyone get booed more venomously than Matt Serra at UFC 83: Serra vs. St. Pierre 2 and I've seen fighters from the heart of communist Russia compete in front of hordes of drunken Americans in New Jersey.
Honestly, the reception Serra was given by Canadian fans at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada, was so hostile you'd have thought that Hitler had just stepped on stage with Satan as his cornerman.
A lot of this hatred came as spillover from Montreal hockey fans, who are just about the most rabid creatures on the planet. Their team, the Montreal Canadiens, had lost a playoff game that afternoon, so it was no surprise that the New York fighter was greeted by thousands of blood-thirsty French Canadians, salivating like wolverines anticipating a fresh kill while venting their pent-up aggression.
Considering that Serra had knocked out Georges St. Pierre in their first encounter, nobody was sure what to make of the rematch. Had that been a lucky punch or would Serra do it again? Heading into the octagon, St. Pierre was probably wondering the same thing, which is why he adopted the safest strategy: ground and pound.
From the opening bell, G.S.P. took Serra down immediately and went to work, passing his guard and pounding him with fists, elbows and knees. "Rush" was never once in trouble and "The Terror" never saw the light of day from the start of the match 'til the very end, when a hailstorm of knees to the ribs forced the ref to stop the fight.
