UFC: Underdog odds don’t faze Fitch

Jon Fitch is an underdog that claims to have a lot of bite heading into Saturday’s UFC 87 Main Event.



The 30-year-old fight product from Fort Wayne, Indiana is listed at +280 odds for his fight against UFC Welterweight Champion, Georges St.-Pierre. The top contender has been written off by many UFC fans for Saturday’s Main Event but he’s not fazed by the talk.

Fitch claims that every fighter has a weakness and on Saturday he’ll find St-Pierre’s and take down one of the most popular mixed martial arts fighters on the planet.

“Nobody’s perfect,” Fitch said. “Fans have this thing of building mythical gods out of men. So maybe they don’t see a lot of the mistakes that are being made. I’m not going to say what those mistakes are; I’m just hoping to expose them.”

At 16-2 in his career, St-Pierre has shown he is mortal, losing to Matt Hughes in 2004 and to Matt Serra last year. He has since avenged both losses, submitting Hughes last December and winning by TKO over Serra in April to regain his championship.

This is St. Pierre’s first title defense since he re-claimed the belt. A fan favorite, St. Pierre has a huge following due to his crowd-pleasing fight style. Considered one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world, he’s listed at -360 odds for this bout.

Fitch, 8-0 in the UFC and 17-2 over his career, knows he’s going up against one of the best but said he’s not feeling any pressure.

“He’s not just another opponent, but there’s no pressure,” said Fitch. “There’s excitement because I thrive to fight the best guys out there.

“That’s all I want to do, that’s all I’ve ever wanted to do, so I don’t see it as pressure. I see it as a great opportunity and I’m excited for it.”

Fitch said he has an “ace in the hole” with a “hybrid wrestling jiu-jitsu fight style” that St. Pierre can’t prepare for. He also said he’s going to pressure the champ and dictate the fight.

“All I can say is that it’s gonna be a fast-paced fight and try not to have any space and just be in his face,” Fitch said.
