Boxing: Vegas plays host to NY street fight
Zab Judah was willing to fight Joshua Clottey on the streets of New York so you know the Brooklyn boxer will bring plenty of fight with him to Las Vegas.
A former welterweight champion, Judah took exception to Clottey saying he wanted his title back in 2004 and decided to pay him a visit at the gym. While the two fighters never exchanged blows then, they’ll have plenty of time to trade punches on Saturday for the vacant IBF Welterweight Title.
Las Vegas played host to ‘The Fight of the Year’ last weekend between Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito and this bout between New Yorkers should provide plenty of fireworks too.
The older Clottey is the favorite at -260 odds with Judah listed at +200. You can also wager on the Final Result and Pick the Round the fight will end, so place your bets and catch the fight on HBO Boxing After Dark at 9:30 pm ET.
Since the altercation at Gleason’s Gym in 2004, much has changed with these two fighters. Judah, then the undisputed welterweight champion, has lost three of his last six fights with his most recent loss at the hands of Cotto in June, 2007.
That was the third loss in four fights for Judah, who lost by unanimous decision to Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Carlos Baldomir in 2006. His first fight of 2007, against Ruben Galvan, was ruled a no contest and stopped due to a cut on Galvan’s forehead. The official couldn’t determine whether the cut was created by a punch or an elbow.
Judah’s last two bouts have gone the distance with him earning unanimous decisions over Edwin Vazquez and Ryan Davis to improve his record to 36-5.
Clottey enters the ring Saturday with a 35-2 record. A 2006 loss to Antonio Margarito is the only blemish on his professional record since 1999 and the 31-year-old claims an injured hand cost him that fight.
“Margarito is not a great boxer," Clottey said. “You can see all of his punches coming. I was catching everything he threw. Even though his defense is not very good, he takes a hard punch. I thought it was not good for Cotto to spend so much time on the ropes, taking punches.
“I was beating Margarito until I hurt my hand. But I never feared any of his punches because I'm a very good defensive fighter and I caught most of his punches.”
On Saturday, Clottey said he plans to fight a Margarito-style fight by constantly moving forward and pressuring Judah.
“Just the way Margarito fights,” he said. “And after beating Judah, I want to go in the ring again against Margarito.”
