Default Antonio Margarito vs. Miguel Cotto Fight Odds - Gambling Preview

    Boxing: Margarito gets his shot

Antonio Margarito arrives on the national stage but the question is, how long will he be there?

The ‘Tijuana Tornado’ enters his highly-anticipated title fight against Miguel Cotto this Saturday night as the +190 underdog. Cotto is listed at -240 odds.

Along with fight odds for this huge welterweight clash, you can also wager on the Final Result and Pick the Round the fight will end. You can catch the fight on HBO PPV, starting at 9 pm ET.

Margarito has been yearning for a fight on the big stage for years, claiming that he’s the most avoided fighter in the world.

Indeed, some of the biggest names in the sport have ignored requests for a match with Margarito, including future Hall of Famer Shane Mosley and the world’s pound-for-pound top fighter, Floyd Mayweather. Mayweather reportedly turned down $8 Million for a fight with Margarito.

For years, big-name fighters have viewed Margarito as a risky bout. The 30-year-old, who entered the professional ranks at the age of 15, has waited a long time to get this fight, which almost didn’t happen.

The WBO Welterweight Champ in 2007, Margarito was in line for a fight with Cotto but opted to accept a mandatory bout against Paul Williams or be stripped of his title. Williams, 32-0 entering the fight, shocked Margarito to earn a unanimous decision, delaying any potential big fight that may have been waiting for him.

Claiming that a slow start cost him the fight with Williams, Margarito knocked out Golden Johnson in the first round of his next fight. Then, back in April, Margarito dismantled Kermit Cintron in six rounds, in a boxing card that featured Cotto in the main event.

"I wasn't into the fight (with Williams) for those first few rounds, and that cost me," Margarito said. "After I saw the tape I said, 'that's never going to happen to me again.'"

The two easy victories finally set the stage for Margarito’s big-prize fight and a renewal of the passionate rivalry between Mexican and Puerto Rican fighters. The rivalry between the two nations has sparked some of the most memorable matches in history and both fighters have the fighting styles that could turn this into an instant classic.

Typical of many Mexican boxers, Margarito fights a crowd-pleasing, straight ahead style, always pushing forward and throwing lots of punches.

Cotto, the WBA Welterweight Champion, made a name by fighting a swarming style that fans love, but in a victory over Mosley last November, the 27-year-old proved he could box a technical fight when he had to.

The win over Mosley capped an impressive year with three victories, including an impressive TKO of Zab Judah in Madison Square Garden.

After a five-round destruction of Alfonso Gomez, from the Contender television show, Cotto signed on to fight Margarito and boxing fans have been waiting for Fight Night ever since.

“Everybody talks about this being the best fight you can make in boxing and I agree, I think it is the best fight you can make in boxing,” Cotto's uncle and trainer Evangelista Cotto said.

And if Margarito, who averaged 113 punches a round in his fight with Cintron, gets his way, the fans will be entertained.

“From the start I'm going to throw punches and throw punches and go as hard as I can,” he said. “I know how hard I worked, and I know I have 12 good, hard rounds in me. I'm not going to pace myself. I'm going to go hard and see if he can keep up with me.”

Prepare for a vicious body attack by Cotto. Margarito's aggression is going to get him in some deep waters, and I think we'll see him go down. A few times. Place your bets!

    It's almost showtime!

Antonio Margarito made Mexico proud Saturday night as he defeated former welterweight champion and rival Miguel Cotto, the hero from Puerto Rico.

The power puncher -- Margarito -- pressured Cotto, then overpowered him.

He won it with 2 knockdowns in the 11th. What A Fight!!!!

I guess I'm gonna go ahead and eat my words now. Great fight, couldn't ask for more, other than my money back! I guess I believed the Cotto hype. Oh wait, I still do. He'll be back. Congrats to Antonio he withstood the barrage with ill effects.
