With a spot in the Elite Eight on the line, the Baylor Bears and Wisconsin Badgers will do battle at the Honda Center in Anaheim on Thursday night.
Twelve seed North Dakota State advanced with a huge upset over No. 5 Oklahoma on Thursday, and will take on the San Diego State Aztecs in the third round of the NCAA tournament on Saturday.
The Baylor Bears entered their matchup with the Nebraska Cornhuskers as one team with momentum against another. The Cornhuskers were hungry for an NCAA Tournament victory, as their last appearance was in 1998.
The No. 7 Oregon Ducks and No. 2 Wisconsin Badgers have survived Round 2 of the 2014 NCAA Tournament, and now they’ll face off in the third round of the West Region on Saturday, March 22. Both Oregon and Wisconsin breezed past their competition in their first matchups.
The 15th-seeded American University Eagles are slated to face the No. 2 Wisconsin Badgers Thursday afternoon, and while it wouldn’t be advised to choose the Eagles as your Cinderella team this season, there are reasons to believe they could cover the spread in their second-round matchup.
The Buckeyes win against Arizona followed the same blueprint as their win against Ohio State. They were outplayed by the Wildcats for stretches, let them back into the ball game late, all before hitting a game winning three with almost no time left on the clock.
The Buckeyes escaped their third round game against Iowa State with a victory. In my opinion they were outplayed but a win is a win.
I have long admired the Shockers program and I thought they would play well but I just didn’t see how they would beat Gonzaga. Even if they were able to shorten the game a little bit and play their guts out I still thought they would come up just a little bit short.
Ole Miss continued their spirited play, upsetting the Badgers in their opening round game of the tournament.
The Buckeyes were happy to let Iona set the pace and beat them at their own game, winning by 25 while scoring 95 points in their opener. Don’t let that number fool you as they are far from an elite offensive team.
Despite Belmont being a perennial Cinderella pick, the Arizona Wildcats had little trouble dispatching them in their opening round game.
All of the advanced metrics say that this Pittsburgh team is really good. They aren’t horrible but I just don’t see it. What I do see is a team that is better than average in the deepest conference in America. They have a few nice wins but this is probably one of the least impressive Pitt teams of the past decade.
They are not as good as the football team but the basketball Broncos are better than you think. They were a very good 12-2 in the nonconference part of their schedule including an impressive win at Creighton that wasn’t even close.
