Both have been fired in the past six months, and these two schools are the faces of the problems that are abundant in college football right now. Fans in Columbus are debating who the next coach should be for the Buckeyes.

Happy Valley is still reeling from the past two weeks horrific allegations surrounding those involved in the Nittany Lions football program. Both teams had disappointing losses last weekend. Which team will right the ship with a win this week?

The Nittany Lions clearly weren’t ready at the beginning of last week’s contest against Nebraska. Penn State did make a late comeback, but it fell short. Matt McGloin appears to have won the starting quarterback battle, but the passing game has been far from great this year. Penn State’s best player is wide receiver Derek Moye, and the team needs to find a way to get him the ball more often. Silas Redd has emerged as the leading rusher for the Nittany Lions. Redd averages five yards per carry. Penn State only averages 21 points per contest this season.

The Nittany Lions defense has been terrific in 2011. This is a unit that ranks eighth in the nation in total defense. Michael Mauti was the leader of the defense, but he is out for the year with a knee injury. The fact that the defense has performed so well even without Mauti is very impressive. D’Antonn Lynn and Nick Sukay lead a very strong secondary for Penn State.

Braxton Miller is a talented freshman quarterback for Ohio State, but he still has a lot of work to do in the passing game. Miller and the Buckeyes passing offense has been non-existent most of the year. In fact, the Buckeyes are 118th out of 120 teams in the nation in passing offense this year. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Ohio State does have a good offensive line and a solid stable of running backs, but without balance the offense is limited. Dan Herron and Carlos Hyde both average 5.4 yards per carry for Ohio State. DeVier Posey will be back in the lineup for the first time this year. He has been serving a suspension. Posey is the Buckeyes most talented receiver, and it will be interesting to see if his presence changes things at all for the Buckeyes offense.

Ohio State’s defense isn’t as dominating as it has been in recent years, but they are still pretty good this season. Outside of a couple poor quarters against Nebraska and Miami earlier this season, this unit has been solid. John Simon has stepped up as a leader on the defensive line. Bradley Roby leads the team with three interceptions.

Neither of these teams are as good as they have been in recent years. Penn State is definitely in a difficult position right now, but I don’t see why the Buckeyes are laying seven points here. This game should come right down to the wire, so I’ll take the points.

Week 12: Indiana vs. Michigan State Preview & Free Pick

Indiana vs Michigan State

Michigan State is the team in control in the Big Ten Legends Division. The Spartans can’t afford a slip up, but they are one game ahead of both Michigan and Nebraska.

Kyle Hunter

Indiana comes to town this weekend. The Hoosiers are 1-9 overall, and 0-6 in the Big Ten. Michigan State almost got tripped up by Minnesota a couple weeks ago. Will the Spartans be ready for this contest?

Kevin Wilson took over the Indiana football program in the offseason. Very little was expected of the team this year, but even with low expectations Hoosier fans can’t be too happy with how the season has gone. Indiana has lost to North Texas and Ball State, and their only win of the year came against South Carolina State. The team did look better in a hard fought 34-20 loss at Ohio State a couple weeks ago. Indiana has had two weeks to prepare for this one so it will be interesting to see if they come out ready to go.

Tre Roberson appears set to get another start at the quarterback spot for Indiana. Roberson is a freshman who has quick feet and is more comfortable running than throwing at this point in his career. As he develops his passing game, he should become a solid signal caller. DeMarlo Belcher has been dismissed from the team, which leaves the Hoosiers without their top wideout. Defensively, the secondary has actually been a pleasant surprise. On the other hand, the rushing defense has been horrendous. Indiana is giving up 246 yards per game on the ground. Opponents are scoring 36 points per game against this defense.
[soliloquy id=”82219″]
Michigan State picked up a huge win last weekend in Iowa City. The Spartans got revenge for last year’s embarrassing loss when they beat Iowa 37-21. It has been the Michigan State defense that has led the way all year long. Jerrell Worthy anchors a very tough defensive line. Worthy is expected to be a first round draft pick, and he receives a double team on nearly every play. The secondary has been a great surprise. The Spartans corners play great defense, and they have forced a lot of turnovers. Isaiah Lewis has four interceptions already this year. Michigan State is giving up just 16.5 points per game.

Kirk Cousins is the steady leader at the helm for the Spartans offense. Cousins has only thrown five interceptions in 297 passes this year. He has 16 touchdown passes and 2,249 yards through the air. Le’Veon Bell and Edwin Baker form a nice tailback tandem for the Spartans. The offensive line has been dinged up this year, but they are starting to get a little healthier. This offense hasn’t been dynamic, but they have come up with big plays when they are most needed.

Michigan State has a key battle in Evanston with Northwestern next weekend, and it wouldn’t be a big surprise if they overlook Indiana a bit here. The Hoosiers seem to be improving as the season moves along, and I think they can keep it within this big number.

The last week has seen allegations of heinous crimes against children that has rocked an entire community. The last thing from most people’s minds right now is a football game. Even though it does seem so much smaller now than it did before, this weekend’s game against Nebraska is a crucial game in the Big Ten.

Penn State is the only team unbeaten in the Big Ten, and Nebraska is still fighting for the Big Ten Legends Division crown.

Bo Pellini and the Cornhuskers will look to rebound after a disappointing home loss at the hands of Northwestern last weekend. The Huskers were 17.5 point home favorites in that game, but they trailed all game and couldn’t quite pull out a comeback victory. Taylor Martinez had a great game throwing the football, but that really isn’t the team’s strength. Nebraska is at their best when they are running the football early and often. The Cornhuskers only picked up 122 yards on 35 carries last week. Rex Burkhead is a workhorse in the backfield, and it would be hard to find a runner who fights harder for every extra yard. Nebraska’s offense averages 35 points per contest.

The big disappointment this year has been the Nebraska defense. This unit was expected to be one of the best in the nation, but they haven’t been very good. Especially troubling is the fact that they are allowing 161 yards per game on the ground. The front seven will need to step up in this one. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

The whirlwind that has gone on around Happy Valley over the last few days has to have affected the players in some way, but only time will tell how they will react. The Nittany Lions are 8-1 at this point in the season, and the defense is definitely the unit to thank for that impressive record. The defense ranks eighth in the nation in total defense. They are only giving up 12.4 points per game so far this year.

What about the Nittany Lions offense? Matt McGloin seems to have taken hold of the quarterback spot of late. McGloin is completing just 56% of his passes, but he has a nice touchdown/interception ratio of 7 to 3. Penn State relies heavily on the running game. Silas Redd has emerged as the team’s primary runner. Redd has already topped 1,000 yards on the season, and he is averaging 5.2 yards per carry. The offense should benefit from a healthy Derek Moye being ready to go for this one.

Emotions will be running high at Beaver Stadium on Saturday. I think both defenses will have the upper hand in this one. Look for a fairly low scoring contest.

Week 8: Penn State vs. Northwestern Preview & Free Pick

Penn St. vs Northwestern Handicapping

Penn State has been bit by the injury bug this year. In hindsight, it should have been a sign of things to come when Joe Paterno was injured in August practice.

Kyle Hunter

The Nittany Lions are without some of their best players as they head to Evanston to take on the Wildcats. Northwestern had high expectations for this season, but they sit at just 2-4.

Pat Fitzgerald’s team really needs to start putting some wins together if they are going to go bowling this year. I expect this to be a very good game.

Matt McGloin and Rob Bolden have been sharing the quarterback duties for Penn State. Bolden has been starting the last few games, but McGloin has come in and taken a lot of snaps on a weekly basis. McGloin has put up better numbers overall, but neither quarterback has been tremendous. Derek Moye is the team’s best play maker offensively, but he will miss this contest with a foot injury. Silas Redd has done a solid job as the Nittany Lions primary ball carrier, but backup Brandon Beachum is listed as questionable for this game.

The Nittany Lions defense is the strength of this team. Unfortunately, they haven’t been able to avoid the injury bug. Michael Mauti was the heart and soul of this defense from his linebacker spot, but he will miss the rest of the season with torn ligaments in his knee. Still, this is a defense that is one of the best in the conference, especially against the pass. Despite the front seven not generating much of a pass rush, the secondary is giving up just 161 passing yards per game.

Dan Persa is one of the best quarterbacks in the nation when healthy, but he hasn’t been completely healthy this year. Persa has shared time with Kain Colter because of his injury issues, but Persa is getting the majority of the snaps at this point. Persa is completing 75% of his passes this year, and he has all the tools to pick apart a defense. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Jeremy Ebert already has 39 receptions and six touchdowns on the season. Starting running back Mike Trumpy is out for the season with a torn ACL, and the Wildcats need to get some improved production from the tailback spot in order to take pressure off the quarterbacks.

The Wildcats have really struggled defensively in 2011. Northwestern is currently ranked 101st in the nation in total defense. They have been beaten by power running teams as well as opponents who simply air it out offensively. It would really help this defense if they could find some kind of a pass rush. The secondary is being forced to cover their man for far too long right now. This defense must improve if Northwestern is going to reach a bowl game this season.

Northwestern jumped out to a 21-0 lead in Happy Valley last year before the Nittany Lions scored 35 straight to win 35-21. The Wildcats really need this game, and the night game in front of the home crowd should really help them.

Week 6: Iowa vs. Penn State Preview & Free Pick

Iowa vs. Penn State

Iowa has owned Penn State over the last few years. The Hawkeyes have won eight of the last nine meetings with the Nittany Lions. Glenn Carson, a linebacker at Penn State, managed to give Iowa a little bit of extra fuel for this one with his comments earlier this week.

Kyle Hunter
Kyle Hunter

Carson said, “Iowa is a wrestling school and Penn State is a football school, so we’ve got to take it to them.” Both of these teams are down quite a bit from where they were a couple years ago, but we should still expect a hard fought battle in Happy Valley on Saturday.

The Hawkeyes dropped a triple overtime game at Iowa State earlier this year, but they did bounce back with wins over Pittsburgh and Louisiana-Monroe. James Vandenburg has been terrific for the Hawkeyes at quarterback this year. Vandenburg has thrown 10 touchdowns and just one interception, while completing 62.8% of his passes. Marvin McNutt is his favorite target on the outside, and he already has four touchdown receptions this season. The Iowa running game hasn’t gotten going very well. Marcus Coker is a solid runner, but Iowa is 69th out of 120 teams in rushing yards per game. The offensive line needs to do a better job opening up holes.

Iowa’s defense lost a ton of talent at the end of last season. This year’s unit doesn’t have near as many stars. The secondary should be one of the best in the league with Prater and Hyde at the corners, but Iowa has allowed 253 yards per game through the air. The defensive front has done a good job stopping the run, but they need to do better pressuring the quarterback.

Joe Paterno still can’t decide on a quarterback. Matt McGloin and Robert Bolden continue to share time under center. McGloin’s numbers are a little bit better, but neither quarterback has been particularly impressive. Derek Moye is one of the Big Ten’s best receivers, and the team needs to get him the football as often as possible. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Moye has 26 receptions and three touchdowns so far this year. Silas Redd has been the primary runner for Penn State this year. Redd is averaging a respectable 4.7 yards per carry. Stephfon Green, a talented runner, is expected to make his season debut this Saturday. The Nittany Lions offensive line has struggled quite a bit this year.

Penn State’s defense has been excellent so far this season. The Nittany Lions rank fifth in the nation in total defense and seventh in the nation in pass defense. Penn State does have a couple key injuries that are likely to hurt them quite a bit on this side of the ball this week. D’Anton Lynn, one of their best corners, will miss this game with a neck injury. Michael Mauti, the heart and soul of the defense, tore ligaments in his knee two weeks ago and he will miss the rest of the season.

Penn State’s offense just hasn’t gotten going this year. Iowa’s defense will stack the box and force the Nittany Lions to throw. Penn State has a very solid defense, and despite the injuries I expect them to play well here.

Huge Week 9 College Football Handicapping Key

Evan Altemus
Evan Altemus

One of the most under used keys in college football handicapping is motivational angles. Let down, look ahead, and bounce back games are some of the most profitable situations year after year in college football, yet most people don’t look at them, especially with the less popular teams. Mediocre to below average BCS conference teams are very capable of having huge swings in performance.
