The time has come for two teams to face off in the 2014 NIT championship. The game won’t get nearly the same coverage as the NCAA Tournament Final Four, but don’t tell that to the No. 1 Minnesota Golden Gophers and the No. 1 South Methodist Mustangs.
The Minnesota Golden Gophers and the Florida State Seminoles, both No. 1 seeds in the 2014 NIT, have had the luxury of home-court advantage through the first three rounds of the tournament.
Lost in the glitz and glamour of the NCAA Tournament is the fact that there have been some very good games in the 2014 NIT. The third-seeded Clemson Tigers are coming off of a dramatic one-point win (50-49) over the No. 2 Illinois Fighting Illini, while the fifth-seeded Belmont Bruins are coming off of a solid 82-71 win over No. 8 Robert Morris.
With the NCAA Tournament taking a short hiatus before the Sweet 16 tips off Thursday, all eyes should be on the NIT. On Tuesday, the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles will face off against the Minnesota Golden Gophers with a trip to New York City on the line. The Winner will head to Maddison Square Garden for the Final Four in April.
The Massachusetts Minutemen are a high scoring team out of the Atlantic 10. They made a push at the end of the season to qualify for the Big Dance but fell short in the A-10 Tournament, losing to juggernaut St. Bonaventure.
The Washington Huskies will make their second trip of the year to the Big Apple on Tuesday, where they will hope to have better results when they take on the No. 6 seeded Minnesota Golden Gophers for a chance to play either Stanford or UMass in Thursday’s NIT championship game.
Minnesota really struggled down the stretch in the regular season, which cost them a shot at the Big Dance, but they looked good in their opening round win in the NIT.

Just 2 ½ weeks ago, coach Ed DeChellis and his Penn State team watched the NCAA Tournament Selection Show with disappointment as they were one of the teams left out in the cold.
Apparently though, the Nittany Lions took this snubbing and used it as motivation to make a postseason run of a different kind, in the NIT Tournament.
