Free Prediction: Louisiana Tech vs. #3 Oklahoma Betting Point Spreads & Preview

Week 1: Bulldogs vs Sooners Picks

NCAA football Week 1 action sees the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs heading to Norman, OK to take on the fourth-ranked Oklahoma Sooners on Saturday August 30th at Oklahoma Memorial Stadium. Cappers Picks provides free NCAA football handicapping tips all season long so check back often.

This should be a straight-up trouncing, as the mid-major Tech bring junior RB Kenneth Dixon – and not much else – to Oklahoma to tangle with the upper-echelon Sooners. Even without stud WR Dorial Green-Beckham, the Sooners are a championship contender and should completely dismantle the visiting Conference USA squad.

Louisiana Tech

For the visiting Bulldogs, former Texas and Mississippi State defensive co-ordinator Manny Diaz is on board, which is exciting for a struggling program like this.

Diaz has a few half-decent players to work with, especially in the secondary with CBs Le’Vander Liggins and Adairius Barnes and safety Xavier Woods. However, with those three names and the running of Dixon, that’s where the optimism ends for Louisiana Tech.

Tech isn’t a great football team and should be in the bottom quarter of the FBS teams in America.

The Bulldogs are coming off a 4-8 season under head coach Skip Holtz and they’ll be lucky to bump up close to .500 ball this season, in the miserable Conference USA.

OU

The Sooners, on the other hand, are still pumped about QB Trevor Knight’s inspired performance in the Sugar Bowl against national heavy Alabama.

[soliloquy id=”82219″]

They anticipate Knight can guide them to the Promised Land in 2014; it all starts with a pumping of the Week 1 visitors.

Even without Green-Beckham, Sterling Shepard is a stud WR and OU also features a loaded defense. Defensive end Charles Tapper and a stacked LB unit headlines and defense that should make most opponents fearful this year.

On top of Knight under center, Oklahoma has battering-ram QB (not unlike Tim Tebow’s role at Florida) Blake Bell, who has since made the position switch to tight end. Bell is a 6″6, 260 lb athlete that can contribute in multiple ways for the Sooners’ attack. He should be a safety valve for Knight this season.

The entire offense is helped by a veteran offensive line; every starter on the unit is an upperclassman (at least a junior). Offensive tackles Tyrus Thompson and Daryl Williams head the five-man front.

Yet, Oklahoma is not without controversy: On top of Green-Beckham’s absence (he was dismissed from Missouri for misbehaviour, and the NCAA denied his application for immediate eligibility), star LB Frank Shannon might miss the season after being found guilty by a school panel of sexual misconduct.

Still, the depth is there to potentially make a run this year in Norman; it’s certainly unlikely (if not damn near impossible) that Week 1 opponent Louisiana Tech will get in the Sooners’ way.

Handicapping Running Football Teams

Run the Football!

Bryan Leonard

“Run the football more times, and you win.”

I hear this all the time, on television and on radio. When examining key games, analysts often conclude one team failed to run the football enough times, and the opponent pulled won the game simply because they had more rushing attempts.

Weekly Football Handicapping + Expert Analysis

Betting Ugly Dogs

Bryan Leonard

Some folks don’t even like LOOKING at ugly underdogs, never mind finding the courage to take the points. But don’t hold your nose and pass on every ugly looking team on the board, because that’s why the point spread was invented. Too many bettors play favorites. I recall one bettor telling me his rule was to NEVER play a bad team. With all due respect, this is the wrong way to look at handicapping. Dogs offer just as much value as favorites.
