2010 PGA Bob Hope Classic Preview/Picks

PGA Betting – Bob Hope Classic Predictions

Course difficulty in the PGA is a polarizing topic. Some fans and bettors love vicious fescue and tough pin placements – the kind of course setups that grace the U.S. Open and get players complaining. Other fans prefer soft greens, super-low scores and, essentially, dart-throwing contests.

Date: Jan. 20- 24, 2010
Event: Bob Hope Classic
Course: PGA West (Palmer Course), La Quinta, California — PGA West (Nicklaus Course) — La Quinta CC — Silver Rock
Purse: $5,000,000
Defending Champ: Pat Perez
FedEX Cup Points: 500

The five-round Bob Hope Classic should appease the latter type of fan, as its four courses ranked as the four easiest of the 51 played on Tour last year.

While birdies and eagles galore can be fun to watch, easy courses make betting tougher, as they level the playing field. Let’s try and sort through the best potential picks of the week.

THE CONTENDERS

Justin Rose

Bob Hope Classic odds: +1850

He finished 2009 strong and his torrid play has carried into 2010 so far; his last round was a 64 on Sunday at the Sony Open. He also finished third the last time he played this tournament (2007) and should attack the pin all weekend long.

Ryan Moore

Bob Hope Classic odds: +1850

He isn’t a household name but his steady iron play matches up well in this tourney. He also looked good two weeks ago at the SBS Championship, finishing sixth. It’s just too bad that he doesn’t offer better value; after all, he’s missed the cut in two of his last three Bob Hope Classics.

SOLID PICKS

Chad Campbell

Bob Hope Classic odds: +2550

Don’t be surprised if Campbell gets the most sportsbook support of anyone this week. He won this tourney in 2006, finished ninth last year and carries decent momentum into this weekend after shooting 66 on Sunday at the Sony Open. Explain to me why he has worse odds than Moore again?

Mike Weir

Bob Hope Classic odds: +2050

If he offered slightly better sportsbook value, he’d be an easy choice this week. He won the Bob Hope Classic in 2003 and finished third last year. The forecast calls for rain this week and Weir has a knack for nestling balls close to the pin in wet conditions.

THE SLEEPER

John Merick

Bob Hope Classic odds: +6550

That’s awfully good value for last year’s runner up, isn’t it? Merick led the field in greens in regulation at the Sony Open last week; with his accuracy on, he could post some low scores. Honorable sleeper mention goes to John Senden, who clocks in at +3250.

THE PICK

Given his solid iron play and ability to adapt to inclement weather, I have a great feeling about Mike Weir  this week. If you prefer the big value play, consider a Merick or Senden, but Weir is the educated pick.

Pick: Mike Weir +2050
