MLB news: Stephen Drew breaks ankle, out for season
The Arizona Diamondbacks’ playoff hopes took a massive blow last night when shortstop Stephen Drew fractured his right ankle.
Drew suffered the injury against the Milwaukee Brewers sliding into home while trying to score from second on a Chris Young hit.
Drew was called out on the play and had to be helped off the field.
Early reports suggest he’s out for the season. Drew was batting .252 with five homers and 45 RBI in a power-sapped season.
Carlos Gomez breaks collarbone
In the same game, the Brewers lost centerfielder Carlos Gomez to a major injury. Gomez broke his collarbone while attempting a diving catch on a Ryan Roberts fly ball.

MLB news: MLB may seize Dodgers
Is Major League Baseball about to seize control of the Los Angeles Dodgers? Reportedly, the league is considering filing a motion to grab control of the team, which has filed for bankruptcy.
Owner Frank McCourt claims that he filed for bankruptcy because the MLB rejected a massive television deal with Fox.
League commissioner Bud Selig maintains, however, that he rejected because McCourt had already put the club into financial trouble by siphoning more than $100 million in club revenue for personal use.
Josh Johnson to see Dr. Andrews;
Gulp. Florida Marlins ace Josh Johnson’s recovery from a right shoulder injury just took a turn for the worst. He’s in the midst of a throwing program but is “not feeling 100 per cent” and is off to see Dr. James Andrews. That means major surgery may be in Johnson’s future.
Thumb surgery for Choo
It appears Shin-Soo Choo’s frustrating 2011 season is at a merciful end. The Cleveland Indians outfielder had surgery yesterday to repair a broken left thumb and could be sidelined for two and a half months if not the rest of the season – especially if the Tribe fall out of the playoff race. Johan Santana stops throwing program
It looks like New York Mets Johan Santana is in jeopardy of missing the entire 2011 season. He reportedly shut down his throwing program 10 days ago after experiencing soreness in his left (throwing) shoulder, which he had surgically repaired last September.
Dodgers owe many $8.33 million
The L.A. Dodgers’ messy financial situation just got worse. The team was already in limbo because of Frank and Jamie McCourt’s divorce; now, it appears the Dodgers owe Manny Ramirez $8.33 million by June 30. [soliloquy id=”82219″]
Manny is due deferred compensation of $25 million over the next three years, left over from the $42-million deal he signed before the 2009 season.
