2009 Super Bowl Betting Options – Training Camp

There’s more than just one reason Super Bowl Sunday is the biggest betting day of the year. In addition to the sheer volume of people and dollars flooding the market, you also have more betting options than any other single day on the calendar – and the list of Super Bowl wagers on tap keeps getting longer and longer.

Let’s start by revisiting the Golden Rule of money management: Diversify. Putting a pile of money on just the pointspread is a risky venture. Breaking that pile down into smaller units and spreading them around will protect you from getting burned by a single bad beat. There are literally hundreds of other ways to play the Super Bowl, from the Super Bowl props market to our live Super Bowl betting feature.

Not that you want to spread yourself too thinly. A sharp bettor is too discriminating to lay cash on every single bet that comes his or her way. Take the time to browse the entire props list; some bets will jump out at you as potential value plays, especially when they fall into your areas of expertise. You shouldn’t have any problem combining quality and quantity in this marketplace. The same goes for live betting. If you’re more familiar with Pittsburgh head coach Mike Tomlin than Arizona’s Ken Whisenhunt, make more bets when the Steelers are on offense.

Your Super Bowl betting experience is ultimately defined by your environment. Are you going to be at a party with friends and/or co-workers? Or are you flying solo in your usual handicapping workspace? The latter option gives you the opportunity to access as many information sources as possible, which is especially important for live betting. You’ll want to shuttle between a handful of websites, in addition to our own, to get the statistics and news updates you need. The industry standards are the NFL home page, Pro Football Reference, and Football Outsiders for more advanced stats.

If Sunday is going to be more of a social event in mixed company (sharps and squares, that is), then be social – imperative if you’re the host, by the way. Sports Betting at the Sportsbook This is where the prop “party sheets” will come out. March Madness has its office pools; your Super Bowl office party no doubt has its own contest to see who can pick the most props correctly. If not, start one. Take a varied selection of, say, 25 from our expansive list, covering both the Steelers and Cardinals. Include at least the featured skill players: QB Ben Roethlisberger, RB Willie Parker and WR Hines Ward for Pittsburgh; QB Kurt Warner, RB Edgerrin James, WR Larry Fitzgerald and WR Anquan Boldin for Arizona.

Your approach to the props market needs to fit the occasion, as well. Some of these bets are purely for entertainment and have no investment value, the most common example being the coin flip. No Super Bowl party sheet is complete without the coin flip prop, but if you’re handicapping the game from your war room with your bankroll in mind, this is not the product for you. Again, there are hundreds of others for your discretion.

You’re not going to be able to out-think your fellow Super Bowl guests on the coin flip, but you can greatly improve your chances of winning the party sheet by doing a little homework. Here’s a classic: How long will it take Jennifer Hudson to sing the National Anthem? The over/under is 121 seconds; a little digging around (like reading this article, for example) will reveal that Hudson took exactly that long at the Democratic National Convention in August. This same evidence-based approach will help you suss out the value props if you’re playing the market. Now all you need for Sunday is a stylish beer-hat.
