NCAAF: CLASH FOR THE ACC COASTAL

The Miami Hurricanes have a huge game tonight hosting the Virginia Tech Hokies, and the winner will have a great chance to win the ACC Coastal Division.

Sportsbook.com has Miami-FL as 4 ½-point favorites with a Total of 43. ESPN will broadcast this game at 7:45 pm ET.

Also, don’t forget about tonight’s Buffalo (+3.5) at Akron game. The forecaster predicts Akron to cover in that one.

Coach Randy Shannon has come in with a plan and this young Miami (6-3, 3-2 ACC) team is starting to bear fruit, showing determination not seen in the recent past, like winning four straight games and coming from behind in overtime 24-17 at Virginia.

The Miami defense has returned to past glories, ranking in the Top 20 nationally and holding teams to 283.7 yards per game. When the Canes are favored by less than 31 points, they are 8-1 ATS off an underdog triumph.

This has not been your typical Virginia Tech (6-3, 3-2 ACC) season by a long stretch. A well below average offensive line has not been able to cover up ordinary play by the skill position players.

The normally reliable Frank Beamer special teams have been unreliable, all adding up to a less than satisfactory season in Blacksburg. The Hokies have allowed three punt-return touchdowns, had a critical punt blocked in their season-opening loss to East Carolina, and were flagged for a momentum-killing roughing the kicker penalty against Florida State.

Still, Virginia Tech heads south 9-1 straight-up and 8-2 ATS in their last true road game of the year.

In this ACC affair, Miami is going to have to protect the pigskin better than it has. Even in winning four in a row, they’ve committed nine turnovers (three in three different games).

First year quarterbacks Robert Marve and Jacory Harris have brought excitement and trepidation. The Hurricanes are going to have to find ways to run the ball against an above average Hokies defense and blend in enough passing to succeed. Tuesday Night FootballThe Canes are just 2-10 ATS versus good rushing defenses allowing 120 or less rushing yards a game.

Whatever coach Beamer said last week before the Maryland game ignited players on both sides of the ball. The Hokies ran for 273 yards at 5.3 yards per carry and the defense held the Terps to a net minus 12 yards rushing.

Running back Darren Evans is the first back to show promise all season and if a gimpy Sean Glennon can go again, Virginia Tech will at least have the semblance of a passing game. This normally is the Tech time of year, sporting an 8-1 ATS record in November gamesover the last three seasons.

This season, if these teams changed uniforms, it might be hard to tell the difference. Shaky passing games, fair running games and the need for the defense and special teams to play well. The Hurricanes are 13-4 Under in home contests over the last three seasons and Virginia Tech is 6-0 UNDER when playing on a Thursday.

Before moving to the ACC, this was one of the biggest games of any season. The Hokies have won nine of the last 14 meetings since 1995, covering the spread 10 times. Virginia Tech has won last two times as the visitor and covered three straight against Miami.

Miami is 0-6 ATS as a favorite of 3.5 to 10 points and Va. Tech is 15-6 ATS as an underdog of 3.5 to 10 points.
