Water Cooler – September 22nd, 2010

Here we go with today’s sports water cooler talk. Here, you won’t just find the straight news; you’ll find the stuff everyone is talking about – the ice breakers, the Twitter Sports Picks and topics…well, basically all the stuff you discuss at the water cooler.

Enjoy!

A shocking quarterback change and some very interesting Joe Torre rumors highlight the news today.

NFL news: Michael Vick named Eagles’ starting quarterback; Vincent Jackson deadline today

On one hand, Michael Vicks’s play over six quarters of action in Weeks 1 and 2 certainly warranted a starting quarterback job. On the other, it was still a massive shock to hear Philadelphia Eagles coach Andy Reid name him the starter for the rest of the season yesterday. Just a day earlier, Reid endorsed Kevin Kolb, who had been cleared to play following his concussion in Week 1.

Michael Vick named Eagles’ starting QB

You have to wonder if the Eagles’ locker room had something to do with the change. Deep threat DeSean Jackson caught wind of the move on live TV and smiled from ear to ear.

The Chargers DID NOT deal Vincent Jackson today. This just in, the Chargers Brass are a bunch of MORONS. He’s already serving a three-game suspension for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy and would miss three more games after that because San Diego placed him on the roster exempt list.

The Minnesota Vikings are certainly working hard to acquire him, having offered a second-round pick and a conditional pick in 2011, but the Chargers are driving a hard bargain. They want a 2011 second rounder and a guaranteed third-rounder.

MLB news: Diamondbacks to name Kevin Towers GM; Joe Torre hints at managing the Mets

Kevin Towers looks like he’s returning o the National League West. He spent 1995 to 2009 with the San Diego Padres, taking them to the 1998 World Series and four playoff appearances overall. Now, the Arizona Diamondbacks are set to name him their new general manager. He beat out four other candidates.

Hard to believe it, but Joe Torre won’t manage in the playoffs this season. He hasn’t been out of the big dance for 15 years. He’s leaving the dysfunctional Los Angeles Dodgers next week – but are his managing days over?

I doubt it. Torre has openly admitted he’s “curious” about what teams would be interested in him and spoke fondly about his early days as a player-manager with the New York Mets. Jerry Manuel, the current (and, let’s be honest, soon-to-be former) Mets manager, was irked by Torre’s comments, questioning why someone would comment “about a job someone already has.”

Congrats to Roy Halladay, who became the first Phillies pitcher to win 20 games in 28 years last night. The last Phillie to do it: Mr. Steve Carlton in 1982.

NCAA football news: Iowa RB Hampton, Brigham Young QB Nelson out for season

Iowa running back Jewel Hampton tore his ACL in Saturday’s loss to Arizona and will likely miss the rest of the season. He was splitting carries with starter Adam Robinson and had totalled 114 yards on 27 rushes so far.

BYU has lost quarterback Riley Nelson for the season. He needs surgery on his non-throwing shoulder and will miss four to five months. Is the injury a blessing for disguise for BYU, however? Coach Bronco Mendenhall was rotating Nelson and Jake Heaps in a quarterback-by-committee. Maybe the Cougars can fare better with one man under center.
