From bizarre injuries to quarterback controversies, the sports world saw it all over the weekend. Let’s sort through the mayhem in today’s news.

Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio suffers heart attack

MLB news: Tyler Colvin hospitalized after bat fragment punctures chest

I doubt we’ll see a more bizarre baseball injury this year – or this decade, for that matter. Chicago Cubs rookie Tyler Colvin stood at third base during yesterday’s game against the Marlins as Wellington Castillo batted. As Castillo stroked double that brought him home, his maple bat broke.

A chunk of the bat flew all the way to third base – and stabbed Colvin in the chest as he ran home.

The sharp fragment narrowly missed his heart but still stabbed deep into his chest. He was hospitalized and will remain there for a few days. He has a tube inserted into his lung to allow air in and prevent the lung from collapsing.

NCAA football news: Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio suffers heart attack, Jacory Harris receives hate message

Michigan State hit a high after grinding out a 34-31 victory over Notre Dame but hit a low just an hour later over the weekend. Head coach Mark Dantonio suffered a heart attack and had surgery at roughly 2:30 a.m. Sunday morning to fix a blocked vessel leading to his heart. He’s expected to make a full recovery but is out indefinitely.

Miami Hurricanes quarterback Jacory Harris said he received one or more racially motivated hate messages after his team lost to Ohio State on September 11. Harris said his Twitter account received at least one comment stating that Miami shouldn’t have “a black quarterback.”

Miami has ordered its players to stop using Twitter.

NFL news: Brandon Jacobs’ helmet ends up in stands; Darrelle Revis injured; quarterback controversy update

Brandon Jacobs didn’t have a banner day in the Giants/Colts game last night, rushing for eight yards on four carries. At one point, he whipped his helmet in frustration – and it wound up in the stands. Jacobs apologized, claiming that he tried to slam the helmet on the ground but that it got caught on his finger.

The Jets were impressive against the Patriots on Sunday but may have lost their best player in the process. Darrelle Revis tried to play through a hamstring injury as he covered Randy Moss but he aggravated it and didn’t play the second half. He’ll have an MRI today to find out how severe the damage is.

How many quarterback controversies are there in the NFL today?

Let’s put it this way; 10 backup quarterbacks saw action yesterday.

Michael Vick dazzled against Detroit but Andy Reid insists Kevin Kolb will get the starting job back this week assuming he’s recovered from his concussion. Jason Campbell may not be so lucky; he got the hook versus St. Louis in favor of Bruce Gradkowski and Tom Cable says he hasn’t decided on a quarterback for Week 3.

Meanwhile, Derek Anderson got yanked for Max Hall but Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt says it was only because Arizona was getting blown out by Atlanta. Jeff Fisher pulled Vince Young for Kerry Collins but he says Young is still the Titans’ starter.

Dennis Dixon hurt his knee yesterday while filling in for Ben Roethlisberger; Byron Leftwich or Charlie Batch may start this weekend.

David Garrard’s job is safe even though he got benched yesterday but Matt Moore may not be so lucky. Jimmy Clausen could start for Carolina in Week 3.
