NFL news: Garrard, Young go down in Monday nighter: James Harrison not sorry for hits; wild day for Junior Seau

Monday Night Football Injuries

Monday Night Football proved costly for Titans quarterback Vince Young and Jaguars quarterback David Garrard. During Tennessee’s 30-3 win, Vince Young sprained his left knee and tweaked his left ankle. He was pulled from the game but Jeff Fisher suggested that Young probably would’ve returned if the score was close. Strangely, Young said to reporter after the game that he thought he was “done for the season” but quickly reneged on that statement. Now he says he feels “pretty good” and considers himself “day-to-day.”

Garrard may not be so lucky. He suffered a concussion and was replaced by Trent Edwards. Garrard’s status for Week 7 and beyond is unclear for now.

Concussions dominated Week 6 in the NFL and one of the men doling them out doesn’t feel bad about it at all. Steelers linebacker James Harrison, who concussed Browns receivers Josh Cribbs and Mohamed Massaquoi with two separate hits, explained that he when he puts guys “asleep,” he knows he’s done his job.

“ I don’t want to injure anybody,” he said. “There’s a big difference between being hurt and being injured. You get hurt, you shake it off and come back the next series or the next game. I try to hurt people.”

Harrison added that he doesn’t want to jeopardize anyone’s career but that it would be “a travesty” if the NFL fines him for his hits on Sunday.

Monday was a weird day for ex-NFLer Junior Seau. The 12-time Pro Bowler was arrested on suspicion of assaulting his girlfriend. Less than nine hours later, after he posted bail, he crashed his SUV, plunging over a cliff.

Little information about his condition was released but we at least know he was healthy enough to speak about the accident afterwards. He told reporters he fell asleep at the wheel; investigators said the lack of skid marks on the road supports Seau’s claim.

Reminder: the NFL trade deadline is 4:00 p.m. ET today. We’ll discuss any trades that happen in tomorrow’s news.

MLB news: Mariners name Eric Wedge manager; Tony La Russa returning to St. Louis

The Seattle Mariners have hit rock-bottom, losing 101 games twice in the last three seasons. Yesterday, they introduced the man they hope can rescue them from the abyss. They named Eric Wedge their new manager. He spent seven seasons with the Cleveland Indians and took them within one game of reaching the World Series in 2007. Wedge is the Mariners’ seventh manager since 2003.

Tony La Russa will manage for a 19th season in the big leagues. The St. Louis Cardinals have retained him on a one-year deal for 2011. La Russa is the franchise’s all-time wins leader and has captured a World Series, eight NL Central titles and two NL pennants with the Cards.

NHL news: Shane Doan suspended three games

Another night in the NHL, another dirty hit, another suspension. Phoenix Coyotes forward Shane Doan has been suspended for three games after his blindside hit on Dan Sexton this past Sunday night. Doan wasn’t penalized during the game, presumably because the hit happened behind the play.
