A coach firing and more of those hefty fines put the NFL atop the daily news yet again today.

NFL news: Cowboys fire Wade Phillips; Nick Collins fined $50,000; Matt Moore out for season

Bye Bye Wade Phillips

Finally, Wade Phillips is out of a job. He seemed to dodge the axe for years but a 1-7 start, the Dallas Cowboys’ worst since 1989, couldn’t save him.

Jerry Jones fired Phillips yesterday. The 63-year-old leaves behind a 34-22 regular-season record and 1-2 playoff record. He’ll be replaced in the interim by longtime Cowboys offensive co-ordinator Jason Garrett, who finally gets his hot at glory. However, whispers among the pundits suggest Dallas will look for a stern, disciplinarian-type coach like Jon Gruden next offseason.

The NFL’s crackdown on dangerous hits continued this week when the league fined Nick Collins $50,000 for his helmet-to-helmet hit on Roy Williams. The NFL didn’t fine any Eagles for the collision with Austin Collie on Sunday. I have to say – the NFL got it right. Collins’ hit was a dirty shot from behind whereas the hit on Collie was really just a pile of defenders crashing into him almost accidentally.

Jimmy Clausen and/or Tony Pike will get their shot to lead the Carolina Panthers under center down the stretch. An MRI on injured starting quarterback Matt Moore’s throwing shoulder revealed a torn labrum. He is out for the season. Stay tuned for a similar update on Lions starter Matt Stafford, who may miss the season with what could be a Grade 3 separation of his right shoulder.

NCA football news: Cam Newton cheated while at Florida? Wisconsin RB John Clay may miss Week 11

Cameron Newton’s scandalous week continues. First, there was the leak about him being shopped to multiple schools for $200,000 last year. Now, Foxsports.com is reporting that Newton had three instances of academic cheating while enrolled at Florida. Reportedly, he was almost expelled from the University. In November 2008, Newton was arrested for stealing a laptop from a student’s dorm room in.

Sixth-ranked Wisconsin may have to survive without star running back John Clay this week. He sprained his right knee against Purdue and is now questionable for Saturday’s clash with Indiana.

Colorado has fired coach Dan Hawkins after an unbelievable collapse against Kansas last Saturday. The writing was already on the wall but the Buffaloes blew a 45-17 fourth quarter lead against the Jayhawks, who scored 35 unanswered points – the second most ever scored in the fourth for a team to win in FBS history. The collapse was the final straw.

MLB news: Athletics win bidding for negotiating rights on Japanese star pitcher Iwakuma

Usually, when a superstar Japanese pitcher arrives in the majors, you expect a big-money team like, say, Boston to win the bidding war, as it did with Daisuke Matsuzaka a few years back. But Oakland? Didn’t see that one coming.

The Athletics have won the negotiating rights to Hisashi Iwakuma and have 30 days to sign him. Widely considered the second-best pitcher in Japan behind Yu Darvish, Iwakuma was 10-9 with a 2.82 ERA last year.
