NFL news: Clinton Portis out for season; Ahmad Bradshaw loses starting job; Colt McCoy out versus Panthers

NFL News For Thanksgiving Day

It shouldn’t come as a major surprise, but Washington Redskins running back Clinton Portis is done for the season. He returned from torn left groin last week after missing five games but quickly left with a new but similar injury – a torn muscle in the lower abdomen. He’ll be placed on injured reserve.

It was one fumble too many for Ahmad Bradshaw. At least for the time being, he’s lost his job as the New York Giants’ starting running back. Though he’s averaging 86.7 rushing yards per game and 4.7 yards per carry, he’s lost five fumbles in 10 games. He’s also fumbled in consecutive games.

The Cleveland Browns have been surprisingly competitive all season, but will that change against Carolina this Sunday? They’ll be without Colt McCoy, who will miss the game with a high ankle sprain. He’ll be replaced by Jake Delhomme, who hasn’t started since September 12, when he sprained his ankle. Delhomme last appeared in a game on October 10, filling in for Seneca Wallace, who suffered – you guessed it – a sprained ankle.

Because you were dying to know – Vince Young apologized to Jeff Fisher via text. It didn’t go over too well. “I’m not a real big text guy,” Fisher said. “I’m not really into this new age stuff. I don’t twit or tweet. But I think face-to-face is a man thing, OK?”

NBA news: Phil Jackson irks Stan Van Gundy

A little insecure, Stan? Orlando Magic coach Stan Van Gundy is ticked off at Phil Jackson for comments the Zen Master made about Pat Riley nudging him out of a job in Miami a few years back.

On a radio show this week, Jackson addressed the rumors that Riley would take over coaching duties for the floundering Miami Heat. He said his take on the situation was that “eventually if things don’t straighten out here soon, it could be the Van Gundy thing all over again.”

Van Gundy was infuriated by the remark, calling the comment “inappropriate” and “ignorant” and insisting that Jackson has “no inside knowledge of any analogy he could make to my situation.”

MLB news: Pirates trade Zach Duke to Diamondbacks

Remember Zach Duke? The former fantasy baseball darling who debuted with an 8-2 record and 1.81 ERA in 2005? We have two stories to report about him. First, he’s alive. Second, he’s been traded. The Pirates shipped him to the Arizona Diamondbacks yesterday for a player to be named. Duke went 8-15 with a 5.72 ERA for Pittsburgh last year.

NCAA football news: Boise State president fires back at Ohio State’s Gee

Early this week, Ohio State president E. Gordon Gee ripped on Boise State, saying the Broncos (and TCU) didn’t deserve a BCS title game berth even if they went undefeated. Gee added that the power conferences like his (The Big Ten) “don’t play the Little Sisters of the Poor.”

Boise State president Bob Kustra fired back yesterday. He said that Gee’s claim that the Big Ten and SEC play a “murderer’s row” schedule is “the greatest exaggeration I think we’ve heard this year in college football.”

Kustra was also unimpressed by Ohio State’s last two schedules, claiming “If [the Buckeyes] are not playing the Little Sisters of the Poor, they’re playing the Little Brothers.”

I have to see, Mr. Kustra, you had me until that comment. Ohio State has played Miami, Wisconsin, Penn State and Iowa already this year. That ain’t exactly easy.
