MLB news: Josh Hamilton wins AL MVP; Aubrey Huff stays in San Francisco

Josh Hamilton wins AL MVP

The ultimate comeback story is finally complete. While he didn’t win a World Series to put the cherry on top, Josh Hamilton’s 2010 season was one to remember. The former first overall pick, who became a hardcore drug addict only to turn his life around and return to baseball, was named American League MVP yesterday.

Hamilton led the majors with a .359 average and .633 slugging percentage while smashing 32 homers and driving in 100 runs. He did all that despite playing through a painful rib injury in the latter part of the season. He helped the Texas Rangers reach the playoffs for the first time since 1999 and win their first-ever playoff series.

Aubrey Huff won a World Series in his first year with the San Francisco Giants and he isn’t going anywhere. After he led the champs in homers (26) and RBI (86) this season, San Francisco re-signed him to a two-year, $22-million deal yesterday.

NFL news: Vince Young asked to leave Titans’ team meeting

Vince Young, out for the season with a torn flexor tendon in his thumb, is no longer welcome in the Tennessee Titans’ proceedings. He’s not actually banned from the facility, as originally reported, but coach Jeff Fisher did ban him from meetings after he had a heated exchange with the quarterback following Sunday’s loss to Washington.

NHL news: Ovechkin fraternizes with enemy, angers coach; Ducks, Hurricanes pull minor trade

Alexander Ovechkin’s love for the game is infectious but he may have taken it a step too far – by sharing laughs with opponents during the post-game media scrum on Monday.

While Washington coach Bruce Boudreau tried to address the reporters, Ovechkin and teammate Alex Semin chatted and shared hearty guffaws in the background with fellow Russian and New Jersey Devils forward Ilya Kovalchuk right after the Devils pounded the Caps 5-0.  Boudreau, visibly irked, said “I’ll reserve my thoughts on that, if you don’t mind.”

Mild trade to report: the Anaheim Ducks traded center Ryan Carter to the Carolina Hurricanes for minor-league forwards Stefan Chaput and Matt Kennedy on Tuesday.

NCAA football news: Ohio State president claims TCU, Boise St. not worthy; Joe Paterno returning in 2011

Is Ohio State a little bitter about the one loss on its record? Its president, E. Gordon Gee, said today that TCU and Boise State don’t deserve a berth in the BCS title game even if they both go undefeated this season. He feels that neither school has a difficult enough schedule to quality for the championship game. BURN.

Joe Paterno will return to coach Penn State next season. College football’s winningest coach ever, now 83 years old, said he always intended to return. He’ll turn 84 on December 21. He’s held the head coaching job for 45 seasons.
