Monday’s news begins with a wild incident that rocked an NCAA football team over the weekend.

NCAA football news: Three Southern Miss players shot; Boise State MLB Hout out for season

Boise St. Defensive Woes

Southern Mississippi is searching for answers after three of its players – linebacker Martez Smith, linebacker Tim Green and defensive end Deddrick Jones – were shot early Sunday morning at a nightclub. All three are in fair condition at a local hospital.

The shootings stemmed from a fight, which began inside the club before spilling out into the parking lot, where the players were shot. Police have made no arrests and haven’t commented on suspects. They believe the shootings were possibly gang-related.

The third-ranked Boise State Broncos took a blow to their defense over the weekend. Linebacker Byron Hout, the team’s fourth-leading tackler, broke his foot against Idaho. He’ll miss the rest of the season and likely won’t be ready to play in a bowl game since he requires surgery.

NFL news: Dolphins lose two quarterbacks; Haley, McDaniels squabble; Hines Ward concussed

Sunday of Week 10 had to be the strangest, most exciting day of the NFL season so far. We saw the Jaguars win on a last-second Hail Mary pass; we saw the Browns fumble in overtime when they were in field goal range. Among the crazy moments was Miami’s quarterback carousel.

Chad Pennington got the start under center for the Dolphins, replacing an ineffective Chad Henne. But his return lasted just two plays. He suffered what could be a career-ending shoulder injury and is probably out for the season at best. Henne got the reins back but couldn’t finish the job after hurting his knee. He was on crutches after the game.

Third-string quarterback Tyler Thigpen took over and did just fine, leading an 85-yard touchdown drive to clinch a victory over Tennessee for the Dolphins.

The AFC West’s rise to relevance continues. The Chiefs/Broncos rivalry intensified yesterday after Denver clubbed Kansas City 49-29.

Chiefs head coach Todd Haley refused to accept Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels’ handshake. Haley didn’t specifically say why but suggested his snub had something to do with the Broncos’ demeanor on the sidelines. In other words, the Broncos were running up the score and having a good time doing it.

The Miami quarterbacks weren’t the only names to go down on Sunday. Steelers wideout Hines Ward suffered a concussion, ending his streak of consecutive games with a catch at 186; Brett Favre felt “sharp pain” in his throwing arm. A pile of other injuries occurred but we don’t have the space to report ’em all today.

NBA news: John Wall sprains ankle; Suns drain 22 three-pointers against Lakers; Kevin Love has 31-31 game

Prized Washington Wizards rookie John Wall got a rude welcome to the NBA over the weekend. He’s started strongly, averaging more than 18 points per game, but he took a beating in Washington’s loss to Chicago on Saturday. He got lit up by Derrick Rose before spraining his ankle and leaving the arena wearing a walking boot.

While Wall actually came back during that game in an attempt to spark a comeback, he’s likely out for a few games.

Hey stats heads – are you sitting down? We saw some crazy numbers in the NBA over the weekend. The Phoenix Suns made 22-three pointers, the second most ever in an NBA game, in a 121-116 win over the Lakers. Overshadowing Phoenix: Kevin Love. The Minnesota Timberwolves center went crazy on Friday, scoring 31 points and grabbing 31 rebounds. No one had tallied 31 boards in a game in the last 28 years.

The interesting part is that the number isn’t much of a fluke for Love. He had 24 boards in a game earlier this season and has five games with 16 or more boards. The guy can rebound.
