NHL news: Jaromir Jagr could return to Penguins

A couple of exciting reunions could be on the horizon for the 2011-12 NHL season.

First off, future Hall-of-Famer Jaromir Jagr wants to return to North America. While rumors last week linked him to Detroit and Montreal, Jagr and his agent reportedly reached out to the Pittsburgh Penguins this week.

Jaromir Jagr could return to Penguins

Jagr was the Penguins’ first-round choice in 1990. In 11 seasons with them, he won two Stanley Cups, four scoring titles, one Hart Trophy and was a six-time All-Star. He reportedly isn’t asking for an outrageous amount of money.

Ryan Smyth eyes Edmonton return

One player whose demand for a reunion is trickier is Ryan Smyth. He badly wants to return to the Edmonton Oilers. The problem is that he isn’t a free agent. This week, he allegedly asked Los Angeles Kings general manager Dean Lombardi to be traded back to Edmonton, where he spent the first 12 seasons of his career. Then again, Smyth later denied the rumor, saying, “Holy cow…I have no idea where that’s coming from. I have not asked for a trade.”

League salary cap to rise $4.6 million

Helping both Jagr and Smyth’s cause: the NHL salary cap will rise by $4.6 million per team for the upcoming season. The upper limit is now $64 million, up from the previous limit of $59.4 million. The cap floor is $48 million. The league cap rises for the seventh straight season since the lockout. It was $39 million for 2005-06. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Habs extend Pacioretty

The Montreal Canadiens have signed Mac Pacioretty to a two-year contract extension. The forward is most famous for being on the receiving end of a controversial hit from Zdeno Chara that left him with fractured vertebra but was quietly a solid offensive contributor for Montreal last season. The 22-year-old had 14 goals and 24 points in 37 games.

His new deal will pay him $1.5 million next season and $1.75 million in 2012-13.
