NHL news: League considering major realignment for 2012-13

Is the NHL on the verge of a major realignment? Reportedly, the league is eying major changes in 2012-13.

The idea is fuelled by the arrival of the Winnipeg Jets, who still have to play in the Southeast division this season despite being in the Northwest.

The Detroit Red Wings, Columbus Blue Jackets and Nashville Predators are all interested in moving from the West to the East to cut down on their gruelling travel schedule.

A potential realignment would cut the divisions from six to four and shift the conference balance so that the East would have 16 teams and the West would have 14, like we see with the National and American Leagues in Major League Baseball.

Capitals re-sign Brooks Laich; Canucks re-sign Kevin Bieksa

Will there actually be any big-name unrestricted free agents left to sign come July 1? Two of the most sought after fish got snapped up today by their original teams. The Washington Capitals re-signed center Brooks Laich to a six-year, $27-million deal. He had 16 goals and 48 points last season.

The Vancouver Canucks retained bruising defenseman Kevin Bieksa on a five-year, $23-mllion extension. He had 10 points in 25 games during Vancouver’s Stanley Cup run.

Panthers acquire Kopecky

The Florida Panthers acquired two-way forward Tomas Kopecky from the Chicago Blackhawks for a seventh-round pick on Monday.

A bit surprising that Kopecky didn’t fetch a better return tallying a respectable 42 points in 81 games last season. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

The Panthers added him largely because they’re desperate to hit the salary cap floor for next season and are more than $20 million short.
