Sports News – MLB news: Second no-hitter for Verlander; Ethier’s hit streak ends; Young, Scutaro, Bourgeois, Ruiz to DL

MLB news: Second no-hitter for Verlander

It takes a special kind of arsenal to throw a no-hitter – and an even better one to throw two. Detroit Tigers ace Justin Verlander, known for his electric stuff, threw his second career no-no over the weekend against the Toronto Blue Jays. He lost the perfect game after an eighth-inning walk but still saw the minimum number of batters because of a double play. Verlander no-hit the Milwaukee Brewers on June 12, 2007.

Andre Ethier fell one game short of equalling the Los Angeles Dodgers’ all-time longest hitting streak, owned by Willie Davis, on Saturday. Ethier went 0 for 4 against the New York Mets, snapping his own streak at 30 games.

A slew of role payers hit the disabled list over the weekend, including Mets starting pitcher Chris Young (shoulder), Red Sox shortstop Marco Scutaro (oblique), Astros outfielder Jason Bourgeois (oblique) and Phillies catcher Carlos Ruiz (back).

NBA news: Bosh admits to jitters in Game 3; referee Salvatore admits to blown call; Phil Jackson’s career over? Playoff record for Terry; Torn toe ligaments for Boozer

Already teased by fans throughout the season for being the tag-along in Miami’s “Big Three,” Chris Bosh manned up after the Heat lost to Boston in Game 3 of their Eastern Conference semifinal matchup on Saturday. Bosh admitted that he felt jitters at the TD Garden.

“Given all the elements that were out there last night…they were so hyped,” Bosh said. “My emotions got the best of me early on and it kind of dictated what I was doing for the rest of the game.” Bosh played through a pinched nerve in his neck and tallied just six points on 1 of 6 shooting.

NBA referee Bennett Salvatore (cool name) admitted to blowing a call in Sunday’s Bulls-Hawks game, which ended 100-88 win for Atlanta. When the Hawks were up 90-84, Derrick Rose drew contact from the Hawks’ Jamal Crawford. Salvatore blew his whistle but said it was inadvertent and called for a jump ball. Later, he admitted that he should’ve called a foul and sent Rose to the line for three shots.

Will the Zen Master’s career end on a low note? Phil Jackson is the man – and the winner of 11 NBA titles. But his quest for a fourth three-peat ended last night when his Lakers became just the fifth defending camp to be swept in a playoff series. Andrew Bynum and Lamar Odom were both ejected in the Lakers’ 122-86 loss to Dallas. While Jackson didn’t officially admit that he’s retiring, he said “this is in all my hopes and aspirations that this is the final game that I’ll coach.”

In that same game, Dallas’ Jason Terry tied a league playoff record by draining nine three-pointers, going 9 of 10 from beyond the arc.

The Atlanta Hawks have drawn their series with the Chicago Bulls 2-2 and the Bulls have their work cut out for them. Carlos Boozer, their second-leading scorer, is playing through torn toe ligaments. The injury happened in the first round and explains his disappointing 9.8 points per game in the playoffs.

NHL news: No timetable for Patrice Bergeron’s return

The Boston Bruins should be celebrating every time the Red Wings and Predators stave off elimination; it gives Patrice Bergeron more time to heal as they prepare for their Eastern Conference final matchup against Tampa Bay.

Bergeron suffered a concussion on a hit by Claude Giroux in Boston’s series-clinching win over Philadelphia on Friday night. He has a history of major concussions. Bergeron leads the Bruins with 12 points in 11 games in the 2010-11 playoffs and has won a league-best 64.2 per cent of his faceoffs.

NFL news: Shula rips Parcells; Mario Williams shifting to linebacker

Miami Dolphins coaching legend Don Shula isn’t happy with the way Bill Parcells left the team after his stint as director of football operations. Shula said “I don’t think so much of him. I’m not a big Parcells fan” and suggested on a radio show that Parcells repeatedly fails with teams and moves on.

The Houston Texans will shift Mario Williams to outside linebacker for the 2011 season. New defensive co-ordinator Wade Phillips wants to use the former defensive end the same way he used DeMarcus Ware in Dallas. Williams plans to lose 15 to 20 pounds for increased speed in his transition.
