Sports News – MLB news: League wants special discipline for DUIs in next CBA; Brain surgery for beaten Giants fan; Royals recall top prospect Hosmer

League wants special discipline for DUIs in next CBA

Major League Baseball’s current collective bargaining agreement expires on December 11 and the league wants to implement a discipline program for players involved in alcohol-related incidents. In 2011 alone, six different players have been arrested on DUI charges: Miguel Cabrera, Derek Lowe, Shin-Soo Choo, Austin Kearns, Coco Crisp and Adam Kennedy. Baseball has no current disciplinary program; none of the six arrested players have been suspended by their teams or the league.

San Francisco Giants fan Bryan Stow, a 42-year-od father of two, is still suffering medical complications after being beaten by two unknown Los Angeles Dodgers fans last month. He requires surgery to remove fluid from his brain; doctors hope to drain it through his abdomen.

Prospects get recalled all the time in baseball but, every once in a while, a special player gets the call to the bigs and generates major buzz. Eric Hosmer of the Kansas City Royals is that kind of player. The 2008 first-round pick was hitting .439 with three homers and 15 RBI in the minors this season.

NBA news: Houston Rockets interview Dwane Casey for coaching job; Ron Artest suspended for Game 3; Stephen Curry wins Dumars Trophy

The Dallas Mavericks are in a heated playoff battle with the Los Angeles Lakers but their assistant coach, Dwane Casey, is already being courted for a future head coaching job. He interviewed with the Houston Rockets on Thursday night. Houston, out to replace Rick Adelman, has also interviewed Kelvin Sampson, Mario Elie, Jack Sikma, and Sam Cassell.

Lakers forward Ron Artest has been suspended for tonight’s Game 3 against the Mavs. He was ejected from Game 2 for clotheslining Mavs guard Jose Juan Barea with 24.4 seconds left in Dallas’ 93-81 win. The league ruled Thursday that the foul was flagrant. Lakers coach Phil Jackson even admitted that the play was “uncalled for” and that he expected the suspension.

Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry is the 2010-11 Joe Dumars Trophy winner as the league’s most sportsmanlike player. He received 88 of a possible 347 first-place votes to beat the Chicago Bulls’ Luol Deng and the Portland Trail Blazers’ LaMarcus Aldridge.

NFL News: Chris Johnson, Hines Ward targeted by separate mistaken police probes; Vince Young to Redskins? Cardinals targeting multiple quarterbacks

Chris Johnson and Hines Ward were both targeted by separate mistaken police probes this week. The Titans’ running back Johnson was filming a show at his condo with MTV when police showed up to investigate an anonymous tip.

“[Why] did the police just walk in my condo saying they think it’s drug activity because it’s a lot of traffic but it was the MTV camera crew… Hard being young, black and rich,” Johnson wrote.

Hines Ward was detained at gunpoint and handcuffed early Thursday morning after a mixup involving a stolen car. He was riding with an unidentified woman who had reported her car stolen a few weeks before after forgetting where she parked it. Ward was released once the woman proved that the car was hers.

According to multiple sources, the Washington Redskins are meant to make a push for Vince Young. The quarterback is likely to be released by the Tennessee Titans and the Redskins don’t look like they’ll roll with Donovan McNabb as their starter next season.

Another team desperate for quarterback help is the Arizona Cardinals. Reportedly, they were in talks with the Philadelphia Eagles for Kevin Kolb last week. Also, they may or may not be negotiating a Kyle Orton trade with the Denver Broncos.

NHL news: Minnesota courting Craig MacTavish?

The Minnesota Wild are looking ahead to next season and may have already zeroed in on their first head-coaching candidate. They recently had a preliminary interview with former Edmonton Oilers head coach Craig MacTavish about their vacancy. He played for 19 years and coached the Oilers to a 301-252-103 record, leading them to Game 7 of the Stanley Cup final in 2006.
