MLB news: Jays’ Reyes avoids dubious record; Joakim Soria loses closing job; Liriano to DL; back pain plagues HanRam

Jays flip Napoli to Rangers for Francisco
MLB news: Jays’ Reyes avoids dubious record

Toronto Blue Jays starter Jo-Jo Reyes avoided quite an embarrassing honor last night. Without a victory, his personal winless streak would’ve hit 29 stats and set a new major-league record. But Reyes rose to the occasion, tossing his first career complete game as the Jays beat the Cleveland Indians 11-1.

The Kansas City Royals have seen enough of Joakim Soria in the closer’s role. He blew a save for the second straight day and third time in four appearances on Monday, serving up a two-run homer to Torii Hunter as the Angels rallied to beat K.C. Youngster Aaron Crow will take over ninth-inning duties for now.

Could Francisco Liriano’s struggles on the hill with the Minnesota Twins this season be due to shoulder inflammation? The Twins placed their “ace” on the DL Monday. He is just 3-5 with a 5.73 ERA during a horrible season for Minny.

Another fallen star whose struggles may be because of a hidden injury: Hanley Ramirez. The Marlins shortstop admitted yesterday that he had been playing through back pain for a while. He said “it’s the worst pain I’ve had in my life” and that he couldn’t even put his shoes on.

NBA news: Dwight Howard to stay in Orlando? Mark Jackson to coach Warriors? J.R. Smith arrested for scootering

Could D12 be staying in Orlando after all? Reportedly, Dwight Howard isn’t resigned to leaving the team as a free agent just yet.

“I’m not trying to run behind nobody like Shaq or be behind someone else,” Howard said, referring to the possibility that he would leave Orlando for a big market just like Shaquille O’Neal did. “I want to start my own path and I want people to follow my path and not just follow somebody else’s path.” He did suggest, however, that he needs a better supporting cast to succeed in Orlando.

Could Mark Jackson be the Golden State Warriors’ next head coach? The former 18-year NBA veteran is reportedly on the team’s shortlist. Jackson, a point guard, is third on the NBA’s all-time assists list.

Denver Nuggets guard-forward J.R. Smith was arrested this week for scootering. Yes, scootering. Police picked him up in Miami this weekend for operating a scooter without a valid license. Sigh. He wasn’t taken to jail for the offense.

NHL news: Atlanta-to-Winnipeg move done for real this time? Conference final ratings explode

After True North Sports and Entertainment signed the agreement to purchase the Atlanta Thrashers with intent to move the franchise to Winnipeg, it appears the move is truly complete. Canada just got an NHL team back. The news should officially break at some point today.

The NHL playoffs are hot on TV at the moment. Friday night’s Game-7 battle between the Tampa Bay Lightning and Boston Bruins was the highest-rated conference final game in nine years and the biggest audience ever on Versus for a non-Stanley Cup contest.
