Tuesday Water Cooler – May 25th, 2010

Here we go with today’s sports water cooler talk. Here, you won’t just find the straight news; you’ll find the stuff everyone is talking about – the ice breakers, the Twitter Sports Picks and topics…well, basically all the stuff you discuss at the water cooler.

Enjoy!

Is the Gilbert Arenas era finally over in D.C. for real? That’s the first of several questions on our mind today.

NBA news: Arenas could be out in Washington

Arenas On Way Out Of Washington?

It can’t be considered a massive surprise that the Washington Wizards want to give Gilbert Arenas one final nudge out the door. After all, he’s played 34 of a possible 164 games since signing his $111-million contract and was just released from a halfway house after serving 30 days for a gun conviction.

But what is fascinating is the deeper reasoning behind Washington’s imminent decision.

The Wizz don’t want Agent Zero anywhere near John Wall.

That’s right – allegedly, they’ve already decided on drafting Wall out of Kentucky with the first overall pick in next month’s draft and don’t want Arenas around as a negative influence. Sounds like smart management to me.

MLB news: Strasburg first runs in AAA – MLB debut next week? A League of Their Own star dies

Stephen Strasburg finally proved himself to be remotely human when he allowed his first two runs at AAA with the Syracuse Chiefs. Between Syracuse and AA-Harrisburg, he has a 0.99 ERA and 54 strikeouts over 45.1 innings.

Yep, he’s ready for the bigs. The Washington Nationals may agree, as he was yanked from last night’s game after just 52 pitches. Rumor has it he’ll debut on June 4 against the Cincinnati Reds.

Mad respect to A League of Their Own for parading a still-hot-back-then Geena Davis around in a skirt and getting her all dirty. But today is sad day because the character Davis played, Dottie Kamenshek, died of natural causes in California yesterday.

She was 84 years old. Her .292 lifetime batting average was likened to the MLB equivalent of hitting .400 and Wally Pipp of the Yankees once described her as “the fanciest-fielding first baseman I’ve ever seen, man or woman.” Cool.

NHL news: Three teams, three straight Stanley Cup finals for Marian Hossa; Flyers peeved over Sandgate

Can third time be a charm or is Marian Hossa becoming the Buffalo Bills (Buffalo Bill?) of hockey? He’s played for three teams in three years and is about to start his third straight Stanley Cup final. Will he finally get a ring?

Forgive me for being slow to report the “Sandgate” scandal in the now-finished Canadiens/Flyers series, but it’s worth mentioning. During Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Final, several Flyer players noticed sand in the hallway around their dressing room. They also noticed that their skates were getting very dull very quickly.

Kimmo Timonen reported that he never has his skates sharpened during games but that he had them done three times in Game 4. Mike Richards had his sharpened five times.

NFL news: Shaun Rogers suspension looming?

Shaun “Big Baby” Rogers (Another guy named Big Baby? Glen Davis and Marcus Jones weren’t enough?) could be suspended based on his arrest at Cleveland’s airport this offseason for possessing a loaded handgun.

Mike Holmgren will discuss the issue with Roger “Iron Fist” Goodell this week at the league meetings in Dallas.
