Sports News – NBA news: Kevin Durant sprains ankle; Mavericks sign Corey Brewer; Jazz sign Corbin to multi-year deal

NBA News For Thursday March 3rd, 2011

The Oklahoma City Thunder looked like a lock to win the Northwest just a week ago. After all, they had the league’s leading scorer in Kevin Durant and the teams chasing them, Denver and Utah, traded away their stars. But Denver won’t go away. The Thunder don’t have Kendrick Perkins (knee) in the lineup yet. And, last night, the news got worse: Kevin Durant went down with a sprained ankle.

Durant suffered the injury last night against the Pacers. He stayed down for several minutes before limping to the locker room. The severity of his injury is unknown.

After the Celtics and Heat relied on buyouts to snag Troy Murphy and Mike Bibby, the Dallas Mavericks are the latest team to pull that trick. The New York Knicks bought out Corey Brewer on Tuesday and, yesterday, he signed with the Mavs. Brewer averaged 8.6 points with the Minnesota Timberwolves before he was sent to New York as part of the three-team Carmelo Anthony trade last week.

Even though the Utah Jazz continue to struggle mightily, they’ve been impressed enough with interim head coach Tyrone Corbin to remove his interim tag. They signed him to a multi-year contract on Wednesday. Corbin was an assistant with Utah since 2004-05.

NFL news: Second back surgery for James Harrison; Julio Jones has foot surgery; Packers cut A.J. Hawk; Hasselbeck to test free-agent waters?

All those illegal hits apparently tired James Harrison’s spine out this past season. He had surgery two weeks ago to repair a herniated disc and doctors discovered another issue during that procedure that needed “cleaning out. “ Harrison had a second surgery yesterday.

Also going under the knife: Julio Jones. The elite wide-receiver prospect out of Alabama, who dazzled at the recent NFL scouting combine, will have surgery to place a screw in his fractured foot this Saturday.

Linebacker A.J. Hawk was the fifth overall pick in the 2006 with the Green Bay Packers and he has a Super Bowl ring to show for it. But his time with the Pack is over. Green Bay cut Hawk on Wednesday. He was due to make $10 million in 2011. General manager Ted Thompson hasn’t ruled out bringing Hawk back at a lesser salary.

Is Matt Hasselbeck set to test the NFL’s free-agent waters? The longtime starting Seahawks quarterback rejected Seattle’s offer this week. General manager John Schneider insists that the two sides are “having great dialogue,” however, and seems confident that a deal will get done.

MLB news: Elijah Dukes arrested for hitting pregnant woman; scuffle in Cubs dugout; Coco Crisp arrested for DUI

What’s with Major League Baseball doing its NFL impression these days? We have an arrest, a fight and another arrest to report today.

Elijah Dukes, now an ex-major leaguer, is in trouble yet again. He’s been arrested for allegedly hitting a pregnant woman. Mountail Mounshay Mack (yep, that’s her name) claims that Dukes smacked her several times in the face during an argument at a motel. Dukes is being held without bond for aggravated battery, driving with a suspended license and a contempt of court warrant.

What’s with the Chicago Cubs and dugout fights? This time, it was Aramis Ramirez and Carlos Silva. After an inning in which Ramirez made three errors at third and Silva served up two homers, a fight broke out between the two. “Boys will be boys,” is all manager Mike Quade really had to say about it.

Oakland’s Coco Crisp is another ballplayer to join the arrest parade. He was picked up on suspicion of driving under the influence in Scottsdale, Arizona on Tuesday night.
