Sports News – NFL news: Talib “person of interest” in shooting; Dez Bryant sued; Bowers fails two physicals; Ochocinco struggling in MLS tryout; Publication slams Newton’s character

Ochocinco struggling in MLS tryout

Lots going on in the NFL today despite the lockout. Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Aqib Talib is a “person of interest” in a March 21 Garland, Texas shooting. Unidentified sources told police that Talib pistol-whipped and shot at his sister’s boyfriend.

Dez Bryant isn’t doing much to dispel Deion Sanders’ claim that he needs help. He owes more than $500,000 in unpaid debts according to two separate civil lawsuits filed against him this week. A New York-based jeweller claims Bryant owes $246,000 and a Texas businessman claims Bryant owes $293,000 for jewelry and $12,350 worth of tickets to sporting events.

Is Da’Quan Bowers’ draft position slipping? The Clemson defensive end, projected as a top-five pick in 2011, has failed at least two physicals due to his ailing knee. He’s scheduled to work out for NFL teams at his pro day on Friday.

Chad Ochocinco’s Major League Soccer tryout isn’t going so well. He struggled to keep pace with the pro players in his first practice game on Monday with Sporting Kansas City. He was scheduled to meet with coach Peter Vermes today and discuss his future (if he has one) with the team.

Pro Football Weekly isn’t pulling any punches on Cameron Newton. A scathing critique by Nolan Nawrocki in the publication’s annual draft magazine said Newton “Always knows where the cameras are and plays to them… has an enormous ego with a sense of entitlement that continually invites trouble and makes him believe he is above the law – does not command respect… Seeks shortcuts and sets a bad example. Immature and has had issues with authority. Not dependable.”

Ouch. Is it a legit assessment or does Pro Football Weekly have some sort of personal feud with the Auburn quarterback?

MLB news: Jason Bay could start season on DL with rib injury; Bonds’ Mat Latos to the DL; mistress speaks out at trial

Jason Bay was hoping to put his injury-plagued 2010 debut with the Mets behind him but it appears he’ll start 2011 on the wrong foot as well. He strained a muscle in his rib cage and it appears he will miss Opening Day and start the season on the DL.

Same goes for Padres ace Mat Latos. The soreness in his throwing shoulder won’t go away, so he’ll opening 2011 on the DL, the team announced yesterday.

Kimberly Bell, Barry Bonds’ ex-mistress, testified at his perjury trial yesterday. She claimed that he admitted to steroid use during their nine-year relationship. She also testified that Bonds’ behavior changed at the end of their affair, claiming that he once threatened to “cut my head off and leave me in a ditch.”

NCAA football news: Top recruit Clowney mistakenly handcuffed

The country’s top NCAA football recruit, Jadeveon Clowney, was caught in the middle of a police investigation last Friday by mistake and detained by police.

Police in Columbia, South Carolina responded to a call about an armed robbery committed by “a group of black males with dreadlocks.” Police stopped Clowney, who is black with dreadlocks, handcuffed him and searched him. They quickly realized their mistake and released Clowney.
