Today’s Sports News – MLB news: Gil Meche suddenly retires; Prince Fielder, Jonathan Papelbon sign; Milton Bradley arrested

Milton Bradley In The News Again

How badly did Gil Meche want to retire at age 32? Bad enough to walk away from the $12 million he was set to earn in the final year of his contract with the Kansas City Royals. He said his shoulder woes were still bad enough that he’d have to pitch out his contract in the bullpen and that he’s a “starting” pitcher and doesn’t want to go out that way. Is he honorable? Or a bit dumb for not taking the money and running?

Prince Fielder and Jonathan Papelbon are remaining with their respective teams for at least one more year. Fielder and the Milwaukee Brewers avoided salary arbitration yesterday by agreeing to a $15.5-million deal.  Same goes for Papelbon; he and the Red Sox settled for $12 million.

Milton Bradley is up to his old tricks. The volatile outfielder was arrested in a felony charge yesterday in Los Angeles. He was released on $50,000 bail. The nature of the charge hasn’t been released.

NFL news: Josh McDaniels, Mike Singletary, Tom Cable find new jobs with lesser roles

Losing an NFL head coaching job doesn’t have to be the end of your career, as we’ve seen over the last 24 hours.

Josh McDaniels may be a jerk with Little Man Syndrome and a poor head coach – but the guy can run an offense. The St. Louis Rams have hired them as their new offensive co-ordinator. He’ll have Sam Bradford and Steven Jackson to work with – arguably upgrades over Kyle Orton and Knowshon Moreno.

Mike Singletary is done with the 49ers but back to doing what he does best; the Minnesota Vikings have hired them as their new linebackers coach.

The Seattle Seahawks fired offensive co-ordinator Jeremy Bates yesterday; they hired Oakland Raiders castoff Tom Cable to be their new offensive line coach.

NBA news: Pistons bench Richard Hamilton amid trade rumors

Richard “Rip” Hamilton hasn’t played for the Detroit Pistons in four games. He’s been benched as he awaits a trade, possibly as part of a Carmelo Anthony deal. Pistons head coach John Kuester has tried to justify the move by saying he was shaking up the rotation to help the team win. But we know what Rip riding the pine is really about.

Golf news: Davis Love III, Jose Maria Olazabal are the next Ryder Cup captains

The Ryder Cup has its captains for 2012 already. On the American side, Davis Love will be named the next captain on Thursday. He has 20 PGA Tour wins, including the PGA Championship in 1997. Love has played on six Ryder Cup teams.

On Tuesday, Team Europe named Jose Maria Olazabal its new captain. He was part of the powerhouse tandem with Seve Ballesteros that went 11-2-2 from 1987-93 in Ryder Cup play. He’s a two-time Masters champion.

In team play or otherwise, Love and Olazabal have met five times, with Olazabal coming out on top four times.
