Enjoy!

A shocker in college hoops and some sad news for the Minnesota Twins kick off the day’s news.

NCAA basketball news: St. Mary’s pulls off a shocker against Gonzaga

Maybe I cursed it when I said the 4.5-point spread felt like a “steal” for Gonzaga. Not only did Gonzaga fail to cover, it lost by a whopping 19 points to St. Mary’s in the WCC title game. Mickey McConnell led the way with 26 points for the Gaels.

So what does it all mean? Well, St. Mary’s qualified early for the NCAA tournament for the first time since winning the WCC tourney in 1987. Gonzaga is still highly likely to make the tourney but, for just the third time in 12 years, it doesn’t have the WCC automatic bid.

MLB news: Nathan may need Tommy John surgery

The Minnesota Twins’ 2010 playoff hopes took a major blow this morning. He was diagnosed with a torn ulnar collateral ligament. He’ll wait two weeks before attempting to throw a baseball again and, based on the prognosis, he’ll decide whether or not to have Tommy John surgery.

The news was more positive for a National League flamethrower yesterday. Cuban import Aroldis Chapman, just 22 years old, made quite the Cactus League debut. He struck out three batters in two scoreless innings and hit triple digits on the radar gun at least once. Some reports say he actually hit 102 MPH with his fastball. If he and Homer Bailey can pan out for the Reds this season, look out.

NBA news: Cavs do it without LeBron

Well, this has to feel good if you’re the Cleveland Cavaliers’ supporting cast. Playing without LeBron James (ankle), Antawn Jamison (knee) and Shaquille O’Neal (thumb), the Cavs still prevailed against San Antonio, winning 97-95 and overcoming a 38-point outburst from Manu Ginobli last night. It’s worth noting that the Spurs were missing Tony Parker (hand), but Cleveland should still be happy considering it had lost nine straight games without LeBron dating back to 2007-08.

Golf news: Couples devouring helpless seniors

Look out, Champions (seniors) Tour. Here comes Fred Couples.

The smooth swinger is 50 years old and now Champions Tour eligible. So is Couples a good fit? Well, all he’s done in three starts this season is win twice – including the last two tournaments. He also leads the Tour in driving distance, sand saves, birdie averages, putting average, scoring average, eagles and greens in regulation. I almost feel sorry for the rest of the old folks.

NASCAR news: Keselowski gets a rude awakening

For all the NASCAR fans out there that love a good driver feud and/or wrecks – here’s a story that covers everything.

Brad Keselowski had a scary, scary incident on Sunday when Carl Edwards sent his car on a major ride, flipping it and leaving Keselowski visibly shaken. The buzz in NASCAR circles, however, is that Keselowski more than had it coming.

Over the last few years, he’s been linked to many wrecks and accused of being a reckless, immature driver. If you notice no one calling out Edwards for Sunday’s incident, that may be why.
